Self-Tipping Skip Keeps Sliding Out of Roll Slots

Post by E.L.Wricklestein »

Hello all,

I am here because google is no help, and I keep getting articles on the controversy of tipping too much/little. I need human wisdom and perspective.

The company I work for provides self-tippers for taking out the recycling and scrap. The tipping mechanism is similar to the teeth of a gear, so they slot into consecutive holes as the bin tips. The problem I’m having is that these teeth pop out and skip forward, preventing the catch at the back from locking the bin in place when it rolls back into the default position.

Everybody I’ve asked on site says this is normal and just something we have to deal with but that simply does not make sense to me. Is there something I can do to prevent this skipping? Is it an indication that the tipper needs to be replaced or perhaps repaired? I’m getting pretty tired of sacrificing productivity to remedy this seemingly unnecessary issue. Convincing my employer to switch to hinged tippers is off the table so I beseech you folk for assistance.

Thanks for reading, and I hope you’re doing alright today

Hhmmmm self-tippers for taking out the recycling and scrap? I think I know what you mean but I cant post a picture on here.
These aren't normally powered, just pushed along and then tipped.

Its classed as a hand tool/ lifting aid I think.... like a wheelbarrow.

I'm thinking PUWER

Hi E.L.Wricklestein

Welcome to the forums

Not sure exactly what you mean, do you have a picture you could share?

Have you sought any advice from the manufacturer?

Perhaps this will prompt our members to assist ./thumbsup..

Does the self-tipper have manufacturer branding/marking on it? If so I'd maybe try to contact them for advice

Hey E.L.Wricklestein, welcome to the forums

You say your company provides self-tippers? Does this mean you hire the equipment out to folks?

Regardless of whether your company uses it or if they hire it out, if it's not working correctly then we need to ask if it's fit for purpose. It sounds like the teeth are designed to keep hold of the bin and under control, then when it rolls back to default, the catch sounds like it should be holding the bin securely in place.

To me, that sounds like two features of the machine that were designed in and we want them to work at all times. If they don't work as intended and somebody is hurt and your company hasn't made the equipment fit for purpose, that's a conversation with the HSE that nobody wants to have. Same goes if you hire out faulty equipment.

Has a risk assessment been carried out, if so, has it called out to have the equipment fixed? Conversations can only get harder from there.
