Torque Wrench - new but when opened was last calibrated in 2017

Post by TWDB »

Hi all,

I have just opened a sealed Torque Wrench - bought new but when opened it was found that it was last calibrated in 2017 when manufactured?

question is this ok to use as brand new? or should i return it and not use ad the certification supplied is from 2017.

i feel it should be sent back and another purchased

Note the cost to buy new is cheaper than recalibration testing.
Thanks T
Update: taken a new job :D hopefully confidence and positivity will return with new challenge - scary though leaving current place after 16 years (6 years H&S !)

It really depends on what it's being used for as to how 'seriously' you take it....

is symptomatic of this quandary...
Cheaper to buy 'new' but how do you know if you'll get another 5 year old one.
Is it a pre-set Wrench or an Adjustable?
If it's an adjustable, what is it checked against every time it's moved from one setting to another?

Ask yourself "Is this a H&S matter or a Quality matter?"
Are you going to buy a new one every year?

The fact that this Wrench was made in 2017 is perhaps relevant, since that is the year the ISO was revised.

Might be worth having a read of this article: https://calibrationselect.co.uk/torque/ ... rtificate/

Differences between ‘declaration of conformance’ and 'calibration'.....

Its a quality issue as our quality form asks for the last calibration date and year.

so does pose us an issue.

Interesting idea that it’s cheaper to buy new. Is it a “cheaper” wrench or perhaps the caLibration is too expensive!
Most garage workshops manage to get them calibrated annually, but they are quite an expensive asset.
If they are not used a lot, so the need the check annually or perhaps push it to 2 yrs? Depends how critical it is.
