Boarding house coverings on noticeboards

Post by Penfold »

Hi all

In a new role at a private school and recently completed a Boarding house inspection, in their rooms each student has a fire retardant noticeboard above their beds. A few students are covering these boards with fabric to make it look better. In the past my predecessor reported these issues as a high fire risk, but I'm wondering if it really is a big issue?

My thoughts are that in most circumstances the student is surrounded by other potentially flammable items (bedding, clothes etc), the house has an L1 system so is it a big risk to allow them to have a bit of fabric?

The only issues I have identified in a couple of room the bedside light is located under the noticeboards that could get covered by the fabric, the majority of the rooms the lights are well away from the area. 99% of the bedside lights are now LED so much less heat produced.

Can I have your thoughts?

A 'high' fire risk?

I agree with you that the risk is low, particularly if LED lighting is in use.

The fact the student will need to stand on the bed to fix items on the noticeboard is a higher risk, and more so if drawing pins may fall onto the bed

Fire wise, it's not what I would define as significant- especially as this is somebody's home for goodness sake

Its a matter of pragmatism v pedantacism - and I always favour the former👍

I totally agree with Messy.
There will be far greater potential fire loading in their room, such as charging their phone somewhere that has clothing heaped on it, etc, etc

I mean, forgetting the 'fabric', what about when their fire retardant notice/pin board is covered in paper notices, menus, course reminders, crib sheets, Sports notices etc, for crying out loud!
