Looking to emply a company to undertaken external Safety inspections of some of our faciities - t

Post by TWDB » Wed Aug 14, 2019 9:22 pm

Guys,

How would you look to find a company / consultant to undertake safety inspections on my behalf at some of our fixed sites UK wide (5No)

any tips on selecting the best company? any recommendations

They would be supporting my Audits/ inspections and undertake an inspection initially on approx. 6 monthly basis. Sites are Waste? Civil engineering/ Environmental

any tips / suggestions would be appreciated

Have you tried looking on the OHSCR (Occupational Health & Safety Consultants Register)?

Whilst is not a fail safe all of these guys on there need to show CMIOSH or equivalent as well as CPD, insurances etc just to get on their register and use the logo. There is a search facility for geographical locations, so it may be cheaper to take on 5 separate inspections rather than one consultant who may charge loads for travel etc

There maybe better companies out there that have not registered for OHSCR though ;)

Link to their website: https://www.oshcr.org

Hope this helps ./thumbsup..

A common misconception, reinforced by those that break the strict rules of the OSHCR.
The register is for individuals who meet the criteria, i.e. Chartered or equivalent membership of a member organisation (see list on the site) and the logo can only be directly associated with that individual.
So any company displaying the Logo on a page as a indication of their 'registration' is in breach of those rules.
Legitimate use would be, for example, if they had Bios of key consultants on their website and individual entries had the logo next to their details. .salut

All that aside, I agree with Wills comments. If the 5 sites are across the whole UK, it might make sense to use different OSHCR consultants to save on expense. If you use a large company, you'll likely get a minion sent out from a regional office who just uses a check sheet to get in and out fast, hence the low quote overall.
And yes, I am on the OSHCR

One method of possibly avoiding this would be to get each of the sites' safety person to go to and inspect a different site.

If done well, this will add a competitive element, whereby they will be far more stringent on the other sites than an external person might! :D

Obviously this would be significantly cheaper and easier to arrange, but the downside is that you are still testing against your own company's internal benchmarks, rather than those of an external body.
We often think that when we have completed our study of one we know all about two, because 'two' is 'one and one.' We forget that we still have to make a study of 'and.'
