Pre-study advice - NGC
Hi All,
Those that saw my first post will know i was looking at the NCRQ as I prefered its study methods.
However, in the mean time my employer have agreed to fund the NEBOSH General Cert over a 2 week period and I'd be silly not to not take them up on their offer. My only concern is that they will go back on their offer (which they have done before previously). However I will remain positive while I wait for my request to go through sign off. I have asked for them to fund NCRQ however my manager stands by his opinion that it's not worth it (which I disagree with).
As a fall back I will enrole to the NCRQ should they decide not to fund my learning.
Now to my question..
I've spent a lot of the day reading about the NEBOSH structure and specifically the common words that they use.
As the course is not for another month I'm keen to use this time to start to do some pre-study.
Is there anything that you would recommend that I look at (a specific book or subject) that will give me a head start for either study option (NCRQ or NEBOSH).
I currently have some exposure to risk assessments and inspection reports so I am thinking something around the law of health and safety?
Thanks in advance

Hi CAD,
Take a look in the downloads section, there's some very good mind maps in there for NGC1 and 2.
Command words are important for the exams but don't get too het up on these as the main ones to remember are list and identify (same) where you can put one word answers and all the rest you need to give more than a one word answer. Describe - you need to brain dump on (go into detail)
Try to read back on a night what you have covered in class during the day and take notes during the time in class.
Download some past papers as these can help you with regards to what may come up in an exam.
When you take the exam, read the question very carefully and then read again before you answer - read it again whilst answering to keep yourself on track of what they are asking for.
Answer the questions in the order you feel comfortable with (you don't have to start with number 1) but check you have answered them all.
Manage your time well as the exam passes pretty quickly. Stick to set minutes per question and if you have time go back over the questions.
Good luck,
SS

Hi all,
Just a quick update.
Employer has decided (quicker than I expected) not to honour their promise to put me through the NEBOSH. It's been described as internal politics, and I am not going to get involved. To say I am a little upset is an understatement.
In short, I've taken the decision to enrole on the NCRQ, which I have done tonight.
The blessing here is that once I've passed i'm not locked into my employer with fees to pay.
I'm really looking forward to getting all my course stuff, and get to studying

Re: Pre-study advice - NGC
I have done the NEBOSH GC and am considering now doing the NCRQ Diploma. I'd be interested to hear how you get on with the format of the information, ease of use, quantity/quality of assistance during study etc.
Good luck with the studies.

Re: Pre-study advice - NGC
Thanks all,
I have completed the pre-assessment and been allocated a tutor. They've also provided a free student membership to IIRSM but I don't know a lot about that organisation.
Just waiting now for my course material and can start getting down into the detail. They suggest half a day a week for the Certificate which would mean completion in approx six months, however I am hoping I can invest a bit more than that each week so hopefully cut that down to 2 or 3 months.
Early signs are good, lots of helpful people on their student forum, however also lots of people who have underestimated the first assignment so I will be treating it with caution.
Thanks again, and I'll keep you updated.
