FIFA & H+S: Bow Your Greedy Heads in Shame
Forget the FIFA bribes and corruption, what about human rights abuses where workers on FIFA building sites are being slaughtered due to the lack of health and safety?? Its a much bigger disgrace that a handful of fat cats allegedly trying to get fatter
Compared with preparations to other similar events and you see how shocking FIFA's Qatar games are shaping up H&S wise.
London 2012 Olympics : 1 fatality
South Africa World Cup: 2 fatalities
Beijing Olympics 2008 : 6 fatalities
Sochi Olympics 2014 : 60 dead
Qatar World Cup 2022 : 1,200 dead so far – that’s 63 deaths per match -(with another 7 years to go)
Now that is 'elf & safety' gone mad

Better version of that graphic and some more detail, in this Washington Post article: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/won ... orruption/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Note that there is a small caveat applied to the data:
Note that there is a small caveat applied to the data:
... I've compared those fatality numbers for Qatar with worker fatality estimates for other major international sporting events in recent years. Some of these numbers (like Sochi's) are third-party estimates, others (like Beijing's) are based on official numbers that are almost certainly an undercount. And it's tough to do an apples-to-apples comparison here, since the Qatar estimates include the deaths of all migrant workers after the announcement of Qatar's successful bid in 2010, while other countries' figures may only include deaths directly related to, say, stadium construction.

I thought that the London 2012 had no fatalities? (http://www.hse.gov.uk/press/2012/hse-ol ... search.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;); you can also add to the picture the London Crossrail project, which until now has only had 1 fatality, despite being the largest construction project in Europe.
The deaths in Qatar are simply shameful, FIFA should bow their heads in shame. Added to this shameful episode is that many of the migrant workers are treated as little more than slaves, wages withheld at the drop of a hat, passports confiscated etc.
And if this wasn't enough you can factor in Qatar's human rights record, attitudes to women and the treatment of the LGBT community.
Qatar at the moment is the last place the 2022 world cup should take place, where next N Korea?

What is sometimes regarded as the single fatality at London 2012 was a crane driver who slipped and fell on a wet ladder during a thunderstorm, sustaining head injuries; but was later found, during the PM, to have suffered a cardiac arrest.
As far as I'm aware, there were 2 deaths during the construction, both heart conditions.

Re: FIFA & H+S: Bow Your Greedy Heads in Shame
It always annoys me that the media bring these shameful things to the forefront and then, after a bit of huffing and puffing by those that could and should stop these practices, it is all forgotten once again and continues until the next death at work happens.

So very true Alexis.
Even the groups that publish such reports just seem to let the issue slide for a year or so and then come out with a Follow Up Report, to back up their previous findings...

"Many thousands of migrant workers on construction sites in Qatar, including those building stadiums for the 2022 World Cup, are being subjected to potentially life-threatening heat and humidity, according to new research on the extreme summer conditions in the Gulf."
