European Campaign on Risk Assessment

Post by HelenPJ »

Loadsa FREE stuff on the OSHA website ../.

http://osha.europa.eu/en/campaigns/hw2008/campaign" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Even better, if English is not your first language, there is a drop-down menu of other European Languages just under the Title bar (right hand side-ish) ./thumbsup..

And my Hero NAPO is in a set of new of Free Videos downloadable from a link to this page:
http://osha.europa.eu/en/campaigns/hw2008/napo" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

hint - if you have an ancient machine which runs using an arthritic hamster, like mine, it's worth the wait to download the WMV or AVI files rather than clicking on the picture box to run the film on your desktop - otherwise you have to keep pressing the play button all the time :?

NAPO vids are usually available in due course from HSE publications - not free ( :( ) as you have to pay for the DVD etc...

Loads of ../. and the factsheets are succinct & clear 8) as usual

../. :wave:

Can anyone give me a clue on how to save the animations to my own device?? I can see how these could really be useful but I haven't always got internet access .

Thanks

Hi Lisa
Right click on the the blue arrow in the box next to the AVI or WMV file and click on Save As, then choose your directory where you want to save it.

May need to check if your computer plays AVI as my work one will only play WMV.

Not to put a damper on this, however I recall a very similar type of video being shown as part of a staff health and safety training day for manual handling and RSI which I attended (as management). During the end of course feedback the staff were very critical that the video treated them as 'less than intelligent' and cartoons were best left with children.

There reaction was somewhat surprising to me, but I was there first-hand to see it. The lesson I took away was whilst an important message was trying to be put across, it will have a negative effect if staff feel they are being be-littled.

Even with the best minds and the greatest of intentions we can still get things very wrong..

They can be very useful if they are used in context, such as:

Not all staff have English as their (or have the same) first language
or as
A lighter moment to break up training sessions which may, of necessity, be a bit ./cyclops

Isolated clips can be used as a means of getting people involved, asking them why they would/would not find themselves doing something similar or just something to have on in the background while "mingling"...
Or a selected clip can round off a tool-box talk type session, if felt appropriate, perhaps just to reinforce good and bad practice on a specific issue without Lecturing the audience (and hopefully sending them away with a chuckle or two)

They are a fun way of getting some key points across but all NAPO's clips should be used appropriately - they are not a substitute (IMO) for full H&S training, but they may also enable involvement of some members of an audience who find H&S a bit "heavy" or think H&S is irrelevant to what they do

NAPO's "bad practice" and "good practice" clips can certainly help highlight issues in a way telling people off (often) doesn't seem to...

Humour often touches the parts that legislation cannot reach ;)

So it is just a useful tool available to those who wish to use it (and Free)
