FLT Drivers

Post by SpamT »

Morning,

I have a query that I can't seem to find any guidance on (or I haven't looked hard enough). But basically, we have had a certified FLT instructor give FLT training last week. One of our employees were deemed too unsafe to pass and obtain a certification. The instructor said that they may pass if they retook the course.

Now, my question is, would this come back to bite us on the ass if we put him back through the course, they pass and then have a major accident down the road. As, we've already identified that they cannot use the equipment safely surely that would be a negative for the company? Or, is it that because we put him through training again we can assume that this person is competent?

Or the instructor is trying to get some more money out of us! ./thumbsup..

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated (apologies for any mistakes, I've just got into the office)...

Does this person has a driving license? you will often find that those who already have a driving license will learn better in a FLT. If the person goes for a second chance, they will still have to pass a test to prove they are capable, I don't think it will have an effect should they be involved in an incident down the line. The question is, do you want to keep pumping money out if potentially they will fail the second test? I have been a FLT and I would not pass someone who might not be safe and has not passed the test (I used to train to RTITB standards).

Hiya,

Thanks for your thoughts!

I just had a a discussion with the site manager regarding this. He highlighted that the member of staff does not have a driving licence and has a very poor knowledge (& culture) regarding health & safety.

We decided not go go through with re-enrolling him on the course based on the above information, as the site manager has deemed him as a possible liability in terms of incidents if they were to drive a FLT.

But, it's great to know if something like this arises again we can re-enrol them on courses without any back lash from future incidents that may occur.

Thanks for your input Juan!

The employer will always be resposible, always.
Even if the employee has an accident, it will be the companys responsibility.....

Yes, well understood from when I did my NEBOSH. I was trying to say, the company has demonstrated that they have done everything they can do that is reasonably practicable with no oversights, in regard to a future adverse event. Sometimes I'm just not great with words lol.

Thank for your input though.
