New equipment in a workplace

Post by Chesterfield »

I would like to introduce new hand held tools in a workplace. Am I correct in the step that I need to take before I do so?
1. Risk assessment
2. Produce SSoW
3. Training
4. Purchase equipment
5. Issue equipment
6. Monitor if the equipment is used correctly
I'll be grateful for any help

Hi Chesterfield, welcome to the forums

There are many factors to think about when bringing new tools to the workplace. A lot of them you have. My points for you to consider would be as follows:
  • What were they using before the new tools?
  • If there is an RA and SSoW in place, these could be amended for the new tools
  • I would also think about regular inspections of the tools, and perhaps a 'tool register
PUWER are the specific regulations in use in UK and they identify the following requirements:
  • Are the tools suitable for intended use?
  • Safe for use, use monitored, and regularly inspected?
  • Used by trained competent people
  • Suitable control measures (guarding, emergency stop, isolation, signage etc
So as you can see you have most of the info in your post, but maybe one or two little tweaks ./thumbsup..

Thank you for your help. I would like to replace blade retractable safety knives with blade concealed safety knives. I just want to to make sure I do it in the correct order.

Hi, Sorry to jump in on this thread, I trying to understand the whole Management of Change process as it was picked up by a client audit recently. Would this type of scenario need a MoC process?

Many Thanks

Hi Anders,

Sorry for the late reply.

Yes, this scenario requires an MoC process.

If you have any queries regarding MoC and when to use it, feel free to drop me a PM.

You are only a millimetre or a millisecond away from the next incident.
