Safety Campaign Ideas - What Works Well?

Post by Safety Man »

Hi All,

Not posted in a while, but looking for some new ideas on tried and tested safety campaigns. I currently work in the Energy sector and recently rolled out a series of hazard hunts getting the worksite to visit mock up worksites to see if they can identify all of the hazards that had been set up.

Am a practical Safety professional and like to try stay away from the PowerPoint presentations and like to get the workforce involved ( who remembers a 20 slide presentation from 12 months ago??)!

So cut to the chase, am looking for some new ideas on any workforce engagement campaigns people may have done in the past that have worked well, open to Ideas from all sectors as I can try and adapt to my workplace/workforce?

Thanks in advance

Always tricky SM - have you considered a mock trial? I've included a link to one to give an idea of what it might involve but I'm not endorsing this exact one and it may well be something you can create yourself to make it specific to your business?

Can be useful to highlight the hazards first of all and then the potential consequences if they aren't taken seriously.

Hopefully you will get a few alternative suggestions from others but happy to start the ball rolling with this one.

For me it is all about interaction and getting staff/folks involved.

I have run design competitions (design new safety logos. which went onto vests and helmets) have also run campaigns which were not specifically work focussed, did one on house safety, gardening safety, these were more to break up the cycle of work based safety campaigns. Those worked well.

I have an idea but I am yet to start so I can't give you any solid answer if it works or not, yet.

When I started off in HSE, I could not identify hazards. I studied it, but when you're on site and you're new in the field, it's a bit difficult to identify. During my NEBOSH IGC, for my practical I visited a site. I looked around and could kind of get an idea of what was wrong, but couldn't point it out. So the HSE Officer showed me one by one, the issues that were available, what was wrong, what harm it could do, and what needs to be fixed.

So in my situation now, I am trying to apply that concept. We have HSE Officers on sites around the world, and they report observations. I was thinking to pick a few, maybe focusing on one topic at a time... like electrical safety, or fire safety, then with the pictures and the description of the observations, I am thinking to circulate emails... kind of like a "If you spot this, report it". I was also thinking of maybe doing case studies on our incidents, but I have to look into it more.

I guess the difference is training the eye to be able to identify those hazards, wherein with hazard hunts, to the general staff, it may be more difficult to identify (as they don't have the background).

I also think using social media is a good idea, a Youtube shorts channel maybe that's private or in your company intranet portal possibly, you could post some short videos after the hazard hunt with explanations.

Edit: just to add on - if you have a communications/marketing team, maybe you could do an internal challenge? In my company, they do "Count your steps" (for better health) and give the winners a prize. Maybe something similar to your hazard hunt challenge? Kind of like a scoreboard, or you know how Pokemon Go was...

Another thing we did (in a mass earthworks and excavation project) was to build a replica of the site in a sand-pit, along with 'Tonka toys' and had a 'Traffic Management' campaign, where once a week we would update the sandpit with the changes that were going on at site.

The operators loved it and loved moving the sand and toys around to replicate site conditions.

We also discussed any near misses, unsafe acts, and conditions around the sand-pit, which seemed to work well.

I understand this wont work for every industry or site, but worked for us.
