Hi guys
I've used the safety climate tool survey in the past - so i wanted to use a again - but was shocked by the price increase in the system.
is it worth it ? and are there alternatives for a climate survey and safety performance bench marking?
Thanks
T

Re: HSL safety climate tool - any other alternatives that anyone has used?
Safety culture is closely related to my area of speciality and I have followed the dialogue around it for 25 years. My observation is that the ideas really have not progressed over that time and my conclusion is that initiatives that attempt to manage safety culture in its own right have very little benefit.
I fully accept that the culture of an organisation has a very significant affect on safety performance. The problem is that there are no tools that allow us to actually change it directly. What is clear, however, is that good design of facilities and good systems of work make fostering a good culture much better.
I doubt there is any harm in carrying out a climate survey and it may highlight one or two things that you are not already aware of, but I feel ultimately the small benefits do not justify the costs. This is especially the case for off-the-shelf surveys that are unlikely to be tailored to you organisation.
There are some good sources of information freely available (links below). I suggest you look at them and pick out one or two areas you want to focus on. You could develop your own, topic specific survey if you wanted to. I feel it would be better to focus on looking at how your systems could be improved to support improvement in safety culture.
Just my thoughts.

IMO, culture is a result of many factors.
Top management values and attitudes.
Managers, supervisors values and attitudes.
Location
Environment - welfare facilities, state of the building,
Size of the organisation
Working practices
How strict is the company on working hours, breaks, etc
HR practices
H&S management
Plus procedures, RA's
Maybe good to know what people think but i think it takes more than just H&S dept to improve the culture.
Needs to be top management, HR, Manager, supervisor etc to improve all aspects of the business
Never done a survey myself so cant comment on that

I have used this one in the past very successfully.

I have also used the one from the HSL but agree they are expensive.
On the PABIAC I have added a handful of open questions to give me more detail about the perceptions of employees
