British Standards [BSI]

Post by Paul1979 »

Does anyone know of anywhere that can supply BS's on a 'pay as you use' basis??

Every now and again, we need to refer to one that is slightly off the normal track...but at £150+ each book, it's not economical for us to buy it.

We have all the 'normal' fire standards but it would be really useful to have access to a central BSI library that didn't cost the earth just for quick referrals / guidance!

We are BSI members so get a decent discount on the books when we need to buy them - but having spoken to BSI they don't offer any solutions other than buying the whole document.

Any advice always appreciated.

Thanks Bernicarey. I wasn't aware of this site. I have access at work to virtually everything, but am not in the habit of carrying 2 tonnes of standards around with me!

You would think that, in the interests of transparency and to allow staff and/or residents freedom to check that those who have safety responsibilities are discharging them properly, the Govt would make key (not all) British Standards available free of charge to all (as Glasgow are doing for their residents)

BS9999 - which is the go-to document for fire safety design - is £415 to non BSI members. How can a residents association or small group of workers afford that? :(

It does seem a ridiculous situation. Manchester Libraries used to offer the same online service, but now it's only available if you visit one of their Libraries.

It's just been shuffled about.

Go here:

Scroll down.

Click on the BSOL link.

Done. No login required, but you have to use their link.

This link might work, but I'm not certain:

Edited by Jack Kane - doesn't work, just removing it from here.

We often think that when we have completed our study of one we know all about two, because 'two' is 'one and one.' We forget that we still have to make a study of 'and.'

Another route is to use the A-Z index....

Some people might find it easier than looking at the Business Resources link .salut
