Hi all,
Using the search function I know this was discussed a few years ago however I wanted to see if there was any difference in opinions, etc.
Would you recommend IOSH over IIRSM or vice versa or are they both similar?
I'm currently a TechIOSH member but feel I am not getting much out of it, then again this could be because I may not be using it to its full potential. I've been reading up on IIRSM and an attracted to it due to it being international and some of my clients are internationally based.
I suppose the answer could be to use both but if there was a choice which one is the most sought after and which would help develop my career further into the H&S profession.

most companies / recruitment look for IOSH membership these days.
Some companies / recruitment don't have a clue what they are asking for ( usually State NEBOSH / IOSH qualification)
if you are paying the membership directly - go with what benefits you the most . ( I joined IOSH for my CV / I stayed with IOSH as my organisation specifies who to join- they pay for that privilege / I maintain my CPD)

I am also like you and dont get a lot from IOSH, likewise I worked abroad and had overseas clients so joined IIRSM as well as IOSH.
I am a member of both and prefer the IIRSM but that is an individual gut feeling rather than anything technical or benefits wise.

I am a member of both, but prefer IIRSM much the same as Will

The deal breaker for me was the time at different membership levels.
I had gained my NEBOSH Diploma before leaving the RAF, and before joining any professional body. When I looked at the development criteria, and the fact that the upcoming OSHCR required Chartered/Fellow membership to get on it, I looked at that in detail. As an independent consultant, the more I can do to raise my profile the better and the OSHCR seemed worth it (still does).
For IOSH, as a GradIOSH, it would probably take me 2 years to get to CMIOSH and be able to get on the OSHCR.
For IIRSM, there was a requirement to have 5 years as a Member before seeking Fellowship.
I believe that has now been changed to be 5 years of CPD, even if some of it is not with them, but it's still 5 years of data I would have to attain, whereas IOSH only required a minimum of 2 years CPD since I had joined.
So that is what swung it for me; not the immediate benefits, but the medium term planning.
