First Interview tips

Post by Ewangoil »

Hi All, I was a member here a while back but forgot my login details so have re joined. I have my first H&S officer job interview on Thursday. It is an entry level position for one of the largest companies in the Uk.
I have been self employed for a number of years and as such i haven't had a job interview in over 15 years. I have all the desired job requirements and qualifications (NEBOSH NGC).
Can anyone give me any tips and hints on interview techniques? This is a dream job for me, at just the right level for me and with a massive company who offer ongoing development opportunities so i want to give it my best shot.

Thanks in advance

Ewan

Hi there Ewan. Welcome back to the fold. .cheers

If you PM me with your old Username, I can match you up with your original posts if you want. If you don't, however, that's fine too.

Well done on your qualifications and even more well done on gaining an interview for your first H&S job! clapclap clapclap

We have some tips in our main site Ewan. https://www.healthandsafetytips.co.uk/b ... afety-jobs

Also go to the search function at the top right hand corner and key in interview tips which will bring up past post that may be able to offer some help too. search.php?keywords=interview+tips

Good luck Ewan. .salut

No problem! ./thumbsup..

Nerves aren't necessarily a bad thing. Make sure you know about the company before you go and have an answer ready to the pest of a question...."what can you bring to the company?"

The thing to remember is that they saw your application and now WANT to meet YOU, which means they saw something in your CV that interested them, so know your CV. ;) They will want to take bits from you CV for you to elaborate on whilst they assess (by the way you reply) whether or not they would be happy to work with you and if you could work with them.

Owing to your long self-employed status, the inevitable question is probably going to be asking you why you now want to join an organisation and how are you going to fit in with this sort of organisation.

Also remember to have some questions to ask them.

Another question asked is where you see yourself 5 years down the line within this organisation.

Initial interviews 15 years ago are just much the same as they are nowadays. It's the second interview that needs more work put into it in my opinion.

The very best of everything at your interview Ewan. .salut

Well, had my interview today and I THINK it went well. I was in for 45 minutes and answered all the questions quite well I think. We even managed a few laughs and went off topic on more than one occasion. Built quite a good rapport with them I think. Should hear next week if I'm getting the 2ND interview.

Well, not heard anything yet. Not sure if that's a good thing or not? They said they had 2 more interviews on Monday there then they would whittle it down to the final interviewees. Is it the done thing for me to contact them and see whats happening, or should i just wait?

Sorry Jack, yeah I called them on Friday. They had one more interview yesterday and will make a decision by the end of this week. The H&S manager didn't seem to mind me calling so hopefully my pro active approach is seen as a positive.

Call never came on Friday unfortunately. Maybe no news is good news but looking less likely as time goes on.
