Hi Charles. Sorry but the event is over now. Jack did attend and found it very good.

I am sure Jack will come in with his views as soon as he can.

Hi and welcome safetyninja.

The course you mention isn't completely free, however, thank you for your suggestion. The following is taken from their website.

"Free of Charge if completed on-line or £25 if learner wants to complete the assessments paperbased.

(A fee of £100.00 per person will apply if the learner fails to complete within the allocated timeframe or withdraws from programme)"

Re: Talking about Mental Health

Just seen this so thought I would add my own personal experience.
A few years ago (maybe 10 or so) I suffered a bit of a melt down which was diagnosed as "depression", I didn't have any money or family problems, in fact everything was going hunky dory.
For some reason I woke up one morning and didn't want to get out of my Pit, I didn't want to wash, shave or even eat, it was like I had given up on life and was waiting for the big fella with the Scythe to come and get me. This episode of the Black Dog lasted approx 3 months and I suffered from lack of sleep and lost a lot of weight.
All through this period which lasted several months my Wife was my Rock she literally forced me to get help from the Doctor and made me go to work everyday. Work were very understanding offering me time off or just letting me do things at my own pace, needless to say my other half "encouraged me" to keep a daily routine and get my backside in to work where I could be with my friends who kept an eye on me.
I was offered Tablets for the depression and insomnia (that is another story, I couldn't do with the depression Meds as they gave me headaches but came to rely on the sleeping Pills too much which thankfully I kicked after a difficult 6 months) and something fairy new at that time, Cognative Behaviour Therapy.
I'm not saying there is a correct way of dealing with issues but for me toughing it out and plodding on day to day eventually paid off but I know that isn't the right way for some :-(
Talking about it certainly helped and even having a good old fashioned cry even though there was nothing to scrike about. Fortunately I was never in a position where I even contemplated "self harm" or worse, sadly some people aren't so lucky :-(
I would never look down on anyone with "issues" having had an unexpected dose of it myself ./thumbsup..

CBT link with some helpful information - https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/cognitive ... erapy-cbt/

"If you think you have a problem that may benefit from treatment with CBT, the first step is usually to speak to your GP.
Your GP may be able to refer you for CBT that's free on the NHS, although you may have to wait.

If you can afford it, you can choose to pay for your therapy privately. The cost of private therapy sessions varies, but it's usually £40-100 per session.
If you're considering having CBT privately, ask your GP if they can suggest a local therapist"

Re: Talking about Mental Health

One of the most important areas to build on is having a environment that feels safe for open to talk and be listened to and remember those with mental health complications can pick the most unlikely person to show warning signs to so be aware and reflect on statements if they just don't seem right or a little unusual "act on it" ask the person or inform somebody else with your concerns.

Personally I have asked some one if they feel like suicide and they said yes I was nervous to ask and shocked by the answer but I am so glad I did ask him.
Also I gave a friend a safe space to talk and for me to listen and a few weeks after he thanked me and said that night was going to be his last. Just talking and listening and allow a safe space to open up helped him think differently.

Remember we do not know how that person is feeling even if we have experienced the same or similar event but we can ask them to help us to see how they are feeling by reflecting and using metaphors, use of no verbal prompts, allow the person to finish speaking and pause before you speak, display body language to show your are truly listening.

To improve on skills in communication in this field I recommend investigating Carl Rogers person centred humanistic approach as a great building block, First steps in counselling is a great read https://www.amazon.co.uk/First-Steps-Co ... 1898059519 also I recommend the Mental Health first Aid Course.

Hope this information can be of some use
