Brutal Honesty Required! It's Time to Improve HSfB
Hey Folks
People are always asking us how they can help around the HSfB main site and forums so they can put something back as a way of saying thanks for the support.
I'm calling on you all now if you wouldn't mind
The main site is in need of change. Here it is in case you haven't managed along yet - http://www.healthandsafetytips.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. I'm not focusing on the forums at the moment, please hold these thoughts for another time
All I'm looking for is for you to give me your absolute brutal honesty about what you think could be better on the main site pages.
Can you find things you are looking for easily enough? Is there something missing from the site you would like to see? Can you view it OK if you are using a hand held device? Is it cluttered? Too many ads? Don't like the colours? Loads slowly? Downloads out of date? Or anything else you can think of.
What annoys you about the main site?? Please let me know, warts n all.
Just post in this topic or contact me or Alexis via the contact page on the site - http://www.healthandsafetytips.co.uk/contact-us" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
It really is much appreciated and really quite necessary if we want to keep up with the times.
Thank you

Site ideas
Having just started my own forum maybe I can help. Not H&S don't worry :-)
The main forum appears a bit dated. It could do with a re-vamp with maybe tiles to click on which is a lot better when using tablets and touch screen laptops.
It would be nice to have a 'timeline' for new posts.
Instead of one forum to chuck all H&S posts in maybe try and separate section - 'Health', 'safety', 'environment' etc.
I think there are far too many moderators. One moderator is ample on a site like this. It appears like there are more staff than members which is not ideal.
A like button is a must. Cannot believe this place does not have that.
Is the password setting really necessary. Capital letters, letters and numbers. Makes it a bit of a pain logging on.

After clicking on the link, the first thing I noticed was the adverts that look like they've been thrown on from a distance
they also appear large (but that could be cos I have the screen at 125% ?????

Have to agree that the Home Page, Landing Page, whatever you wish to call it, looks like a scattering of oversize Logos.
I know allowance has to be made for different devices and screen ratios, but it just seems too much.
Then on the Downloads page the Downloads Blue Box is massive.
If I change the page zoom using Ctrl +/-, it seems to make the font disproportionately smaller compared to the graphics.

The homepage looks a little out-dated.
As mentioned the graphics seem disproportionately large to the text.
Apart from the logo and search bar at the top of the page, there seems a lot of empty space.
Whilst easy to navigate it isnt smooth and each page is slow to load and also you need to scroll down to find what you are hunting for due to adverts. Whilst advertising keeps the site going to me it should be secondary to the information the site has.
Maybe have a scroll bar with the adverts and the info people want near the top of the page so it is easier to find/navigate.

It turns out I had posted this request without actually giving public forum members the correct permissions to post in the topic. Moderators had permissions.
So, please post away

The sponsor logo, adverts and content is sometimes hard to distinguish where each starts and stops as the background is all white and everything merges into each other. Some different background colour to separate content from sponsors from adverts would help.
The big blue boxes don't seem to help. I know this is the blog page, I just clicked on it.
In the download section I think it would be better in alphabetical list view.
Is every document in the section 'hot'. What does 'hot' even mean?
Is the content still relevant to current regulations?
Just my thoughts.
Hope they help
Glen

Brilliant Glen, thanks very much.
For info, hot means it's a popular download. I can set the number of downloads which triggers the 'hot' icon to appear.
Not all downloads are completely current, something which we have always been aware of. I do expect people to check anything they download from the internet for accuracy and relevancy, but it's something I'd like to tighten up on here.

Re: Brutal Honesty Required! It's Time to Improve HSfB
A recent post commented (I don't wish to use the word complain) about not getting acknowledged by the OP for an answer given to a question. Another forum I visit has a click on 'Like' option for posts (not fb). In our case it can be comforting to know that one's peers acknowledge posts usually with handclaps - without wishing to blow smoke up anyone's backside, a clickable 'Like' choice would be so much simpler. TekTips uses the award of a 'Star' for a good post and has a table ranking. I wouldn't go so far as a table ranking & MVP status but a post with 'Likes' should indicate a good answer to a question for other readers. ...Just a thought.

Re: Brutal Honesty Required! It's Time to Improve HSfB
Thanks again everybody, much appreciated.
Essex, apologies, I've been collating all comments this morning and didn't see your post when you posted it. Many thanks for your comments.
An update on what I'm doing with everybody's thoughts...
Collating them all for a start and identifying common themes.
Identified the minimum content for the home page to ensure it puts across the core values of the site. I'd also like the home page to be the 'dashboard' for the rest of the site content and for it to be continually updated with new content.
I've looked at new modern responsive templates which will suit all devices, PC, tablet, phone and have selected my top ten.
I've started exploring the ideas and suggestions given which will take a little more time to develop.
More as things progress.
