(As pointed out elsewhere, EMAS contains a key clause of ISO 14001 verbatim & is available for free via the above website)

ISO 14001, arguably the most widely known Environmental Management System Standard to which an organisation can be certified (as compliant) is copyright and therefore should be purchased either from ISO themselves or from the National Standards Body - British Standards Institute (BSI). Similarly for BS 8855 (see the IEMA Acorn Scheme & BSI). However, your local library may have a copy or access to BSOL so that you can view the standard and make notes

I'd be interested to know what you think of the course as an environmental qual is on my list of things to do this year.

I recently bought "A Guide to the Management of Environmental Risks in the Workplace: Meets Requirements of the NEBOSH Certificate in Environmental Management Award" book by RMS which is supposed to cover the IEMA Certificate course as well as NEBOSH. Got it cheap for just under £24 delivered but finding mistakes that any good proof-reader should have flagged up pre-print so I'm not overly impressed with it so far.

The law element parallels the H&S law you might have covered previously (only the Acts and Regulations are different) and 14001 looks like 18001 so progress can be pretty rapid in some areas.

Get a copy of the Learning Outcomes from http://www.iema.net/training/delegates/trngforassociate" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and grab a past paper or two to give yourself a flavour of what's to come.

Just to update for anyone who might be interested in the IEMA Associate Certificate, the IEMA now offer on-line, on demand examinations for those who are self-studying or have sufficient prior knowledge.

The exam replaces the open-book assessment that the IEMA previously offered thrice yearly to candidates. The cost is the same (£122 + £50 joining/membership fee) but is completed in 2.5 hours (the open book assessment was 2 weeks) and is marked within 6 weeks (the open book assessment was 16 weeks) so offers a quick route to AIEMA for those that feel they're up to it.
