Nottingham Railway Stn Fire

Post by bernicarey » Mon Jan 15, 2018 10:52 am

For those of you that didn't catch it on the News last week, Nottingham Railway Station had a fire early on Friday morning.

Police have now announced that they are treating it as Arson. The fire was centred on the ladies Toilets in the recently refurbished Station.

Nottingham station fire: Sprinklers 'could have stopped' blaze - By Caroline Lowbridge
BBC News - Wed 17 Jan 2018

"A severe blaze which gutted part of a railway station could have been over within an hour if sprinklers had been installed, a fire chief has said.

The fire at Nottingham station burned for 12 hours after a new section of the station caught fire on Friday."

A member of staff told the BBC they had seen smoke coming from a sanitary bin in the toilets.
So it was seen early enough that the exact starting point was identified, yet it became this major blaze? .scratch .scratch
I do now find myself wondering about the construction materials used in the new build, or whether an accelerant was in play....

The whole Sprinkler issue now seems to be becoming a campaigning matter with Fire officers at all levels getting in on it.

Woman jailed after the major fire at Nottingham station last year.
£5M of damage and she gets just 25 months, so out in a year probably....

The sentence does seem a bit light, but at least they got a conviction for arson.
I attended several significant fires where the CPS downgraded the case to Criminal Damage as lesser evidence is required to get a conviction. But of course, there are sentencing restrictions which can be frustrating

So to get 24 months on an arson is poor. Let's not forget though that the Judge will be sighted of all the evidence including medical reports and personal circumstances as he weighs up the term.

Not a great deterrent tho is it?

They were just lucky the technology was available to recover the CCTV footage, which left her with little choice but to confess. :?

I am sure it was a similar situation when there was the massive fire in Liverpool recently, something like 1100 cars where destoryed but when talking to witnesses serveral people had reported walking past a single car that was on fire!

Some further, more detailed info, on the rapid spread of the fire.

Thank you for this, I've been waiting to see what caused this to be such a big event. Drug users starting fires in public toilets are a dime a dozen, but usually the damage is contained to a single cubicle – rarely is the entire toilet damaged, let along £6m worth of railway station.

No doubt this woman will continue to be blamed for the entire thing, whilst the builders and co. get away with actions that were ultimately more responsible for the damage.

It's a bit like blaming the faulty white goods manufacturer for the entire Grenfell disaster.

I did like this bit though:
Network Rail says the polystyrene has now been removed.
...By the fire, presumably.
