NEBOSH beginner

Post by Deano90 »

Hi all,

New to the forum, health and safety and NEBOSH!

I'm studying the course part time (one night per week) and attend the first seminar this evening. We started with gc2 as the way the course is set up is rolling semester to semester.

I must say I find it quite daunting when scanning the syllabus and revision guides as there is that much information to retain .scratch

Does anyone have any revision tips? I've downloaded some of the guides but does anyone have a strategy for revision that helped them? I'm struggling with just how I am gunna structure and guide my study time.

TIA :D

Deano90 welcome to the forums

I take it you have seen our downloads section?

As for structure of revision and that, maybe your tutor can assist.

Also if you search the previous posts within the forums there is wealth of nuggets in there with great info ;)

Good luck with your studies ../.

Hello Deano90.

Welcome. This is a great place to find resources and ask questions from experienced members and they are all friendly! I suggest checking out the NEBOSH certificate section- Otto has come up with a fantastic download for the General Certificate although now I think half of it is probably obsolete due to the new set up so just concentrate on GC1.
https://www.healthandsafetytips.co.uk/b ... ment-paper
https://www.healthandsafetytips.co.uk/f ... f=2&t=6133
https://www.healthandsafetytips.co.uk/f ... um.php?f=2

When I did my certificate, like many others on here, I had a full time job as well as a new family (3 month old and 17 month old) at the time but this piece of advice applies to whatever your circumstances;

1. Make a timetable or a commitment in your spare time on when you will be doing revision and what you will be revising, this is essential so you don't get lost in all of the elements. Make sure you study at the times you have committed to no matter what- might seem militaristic but it worked for me and I have never been good at exams.

2. Make little flash cards of important points and put one you struggle the most with in the bathroom (I used the principles of prevention for this certain task and from that day- they have never left me)

3. Remember- you get out of it what you put in, you need to be prepared- not just with revision- go to the NEBOSH website- download examiners reports, study the command words and really get to know what each command word means in an answer (identify, give, outline etc)
https://www.nebosh.org.uk/site-search/? ... rs+results https://www.nebosh.org.uk/site-search/? ... mand+words

4. You are not alone- you have the backing of everyone in this forum and everybody here is really supportive.

Bonus point- in the exam- I know time is something you will have to manage but take extra special care with your handwriting- I have such bad handwriting I should be a doctor but I took a long time writing answers out so they could read them.

Hope these help and don't be afraid to ask anything else. Check out the downloads section as this has a wealth of resources for each qualification as well as in general.

All the best and good luck

Thanks for the replies. Really useful techniques there!

I've committed to staying back at the office and studying every night after work. After I've read each topic a couple of times I have been self testing my knowledge with a question and answer afterwards.

I realise this will get more difficult as the studies go on as there are more elements to cover.
I figured this would be the best method for me as I have great difficulty just reading and retaining information.

Also been trying to recall information when on site and in the workplace to keep things fresh in my memory!

Hi Deano and another warm welcome from me. .salut

Great advice above. I have added some links to Towsey's post just to help you find the areas mentioned.

Good Idea to stay back at work for some study after all that's where you will apply your future knowledge. ./thumbsup..

An added link from our main site downloads pages may help too. Scroll down to the NEBOSH General Certificate section and you will see the Flash Cards by Angela Cluley. There are others there also. ./thumbsup.. https://www.healthandsafetytips.co.uk/d ... h-specific

Good luck with the study and look forward to travelling your NEBOSH path with you.

p.s. We are told there is no "NEBOSH Speak", but there is in my opinion, so use this wording when doing your Q&A tests and when in the workplace.

Thanks alexis!

Yeah the wording of questions is something I'm trying to get to grips with at the moment. Answers are in my head but how to answer them as to the sample answer wording is proving a little bit of a struggle!

Another wee tip for your exams and when you come to doing practice papers with time limits is:

1 Do the question that you know you are well versed in first, as this will settle you and give you confidence, but remember, if you chose Question 4 as your first one, make sure you put the correct Question number against it i.e. First question=Q4.

2 For each question, when you take that moment to think about what is required of the answer, it is good to jot down, either in the margin, or alongside the question number (before you put your reply) those thoughts i.e. control measures, hierarchy, WAH etc.
The reason is, that if you don't have time to complete the question, or forget something in your answer, your "workings" can gain that all important couple of marks, which could be just what is needed for that pass.

3 If a question only requires a (2) point answer, read that one over again (just as you would do with a larger points question) to make sure you answer what it is actually asking. I found myself thinking it was only 2 marks, so it's o.k., I will know that no problem, but forgot it was worth 2 marks and replied with just one long-winded one, therefore losing one mark...... i.e.

Explain the term health and safety culture. Taken from HSE books...

“ (1) The safety culture of an organisation is the
product of individual and group values,
attitudes, perceptions, competencies, and
patterns of behaviour that determine the
commitment to, and the style and proficiency
of, an organisation’s health and safety
management.
(2) Organisations with a positive
safety culture are characterised by
communications founded on mutual trust, by
shared perceptions of the importance of safety
and by confidence in the efficacy of preventive
measures.”

What I am trying to say is don't, like I did, poo-poo the answers to a 2 point question. They are just as important as the 10 point one.

You will be fine, as one day during your study, things will finally click into place. Promise! .salut

The course provider is paying for an individual exam date which will be the 29th of April.

Are you studying the 2014 syllabus?
