I know there are a few here who work in offshore oil production and similar so thought I would share this.
It's June 1974 and I was up north visiting family in Teeside when Graythorp 1, a massive oil production jacket (platform legs module) was floated out from its yard nearby. I was 15 years old and was captivated by the sheer enormity of the engineering. A floating crane was moored at docks seconds from my relatives house and was the biggest ship I had ever seen.
This video is a documentary of the construction of the vessel. It shows long hair, flares and jumbo shirt collars a plenty, plus very few hard hats, hardly any working at height lanyards, plenty of smoking, only one computer and my favourite, cans of lager being consumed at the end of day project meeting.
Even the earthmoving equipment used to make the dock seems ancient. All draglines and not a single hydraulic excavator or backhoe in sight
Am I really that old? (That is a rhetorical question thank you and needs no answer )
