Thought I'd post some holiday snaps.
We were in Canada and Alaska and I managed not to get too distracted by H&S matters, so as to keep on the right side of mrsC for the duration...
We stayed at the historic, i.e. it's almost 100 years old, Deer Lodge at Lake Louise, Alberta, for 2 nights.
This is the floor plan on the back of our room door. You'll note that only the newer extension from the 1980s has fire doors along the corridor.
In several places in the original part, there were fire hoses, including on the stairs between levels so they could easily go up or down!
No Fire Doors on the stairs to get in the way....
Of course, even when there were fire doors in the corridor, it doesn't mean there weren't wedged open... yes they were wedges...

Re: Holiday snaps
You sad bugger! Fancy taking photos like that on holiday. You wouldn't get me doing it!!
That hose on the stairs looks really hideous and OTT for a lovely old building. I am glad we are a bit more subtle in the UK re looking after our heritage

Re: Holiday snaps
I had a feeling the installation was original. I did actually take a look at the hose and it was quite new, but I guess the pipework is at least 1980s when the place was refurbished, but possible older. if you look at the ceilings, there's no sprinklers which I found surprising.
First time I'd seen anything like that, and we stayed in some 'quaint' places when we lived in the US and were away on road trips, but nothing like that place.
Meanwhile, the really plush hotel that's actually at the lakeside has drop down shutters all over the place and it's probably only about 15 years newer.
If you look at the corridor photo of the old row of telephone cubicles, you'll see the MCPs either side of where a shutter will drop. But then it was somewhat larger and extremely posh. But it's open to non residents as there's a selection of fancy gift shops for all the visitors to the lake.

Re: Holiday snaps
I was quite proud of this shot of 3 Bald Eagles flying along above the river next to the train.
This was the press extract I saw recently on the internet:
The old telegraph poles next to the track have been left there since being made redundant with the introduction of modern signalling and radios. Many thousands of them still with their glass insulators, which depending on the colour each go for £10 or more
I did spot this in the yards at Vancouver. Looks like an aircraft turbine engine used as a deicer/snowblower. The RAF used to use something similar for runway de-icing up until the 1990s. I recently saw an old press report of when a UK Railway tried to do the same in the late 1940s, but they gave up because the steam engine couldn't make way forward against the thrust of the turbine!
Risk assessment anyone? This was the press extract I saw recently on the internet:

Re: Holiday snaps
In Alaska, it seems that most commercial buildings have an external Fire department Connection, even small 2 story shops, presumably just for the sprinklers.
Just in case FDC means nothing to you, they spell it out... I was impressed by this wheelchair accessible bus with is fold away lift underneath When the cruise shop docked back in Vancouver, I watched the 2 FLTs driving around stacking pallets.... Note the Fire Hose Points! And that's the end of the work related holiday snaps
