INTERNATIONAL - Country Specific H&S Law here...

Post by HelenPJ »

I have shamelessy purloined from my earlier posting which said Hi to one of our International Contingent and realised it might be a bit buried in there for
1. anyone else who needs to check out H&S Law in another country than their normal residence for whatever reason or
2. need a pointer to their own country's H&S and Employment laws or
3. possible comparisons between countrys' H&S laws for assignments/research etc so:
The reason that a lot of Health and Safety reference and legislation is so similar across so many countries is mainly due to the International Labour Organisation. The ILO is a tripartite organisation which is constituted of:
1/4 Employers Organisations Representatives
1/4 Workers Representatives (usually Trade Union Organisations)
and
1/2 Governments' Representatives

The process of drafting, ratifying and influencing Health and Safety Legislation by the ILO can be found in the Downloads Section of this site: http://www.healthandsafetytips.co.uk/Downloads.htm in the Law section "Flowcharts - legislative processes & TU influence" - go the end of the document for ILO.
( promoting my own work again [smilie=sorry.gif] )

The ILO website is here: http://www.ilo.org/
and Standards and Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work section is here: http://www.ilo.org/public/english/standards/index.htm

In this context, "english" in the URL only refers to the language it is available in, as the ILO works in 3 official languages - English, French and Spanish.

You might also find ILO's NATLEX useful - http://www.ilo.org/dyn/natlex/natlex_browse.homeQuote:
Welcome to NATLEX, the database of national labour, social security and related human rights legislation maintained by the ILO's International Labour Standards Department. Records in NATLEX provide abstracts of legislation and relevant citation information, and they are indexed by keywords and by subject classifications. Each record in NATLEX appears in only one of the three ILO official languages (English/French/Spanish). Where possible, the full text of the law or a relevant electronic source is linked to the record.
andQuote:
NATLEX contains over 55,000 records covering over 170 countries and territories, and all efforts are made to keep the database up-to-date. Nevertheless, some delays can occur between receiving information and updating the records. Users are encouraged to report any errors or omissions in NATLEX to infonorm@ilo.org.

For USA, http://www.ilo.org/dyn/natlex/natlex_br ... ountry=USA and all the listed legislation is then done by category.
The countries are listed alphabetically. Great Britain :P is listed as United Kingdom  for example, so if you can't find the country you are looking for, it will probably be there but called "something else" than you expect.

Happy hunting and hope this is useful ../.
