Hi all,
My name is Jamee and I have been considering a career change for a while now. I am a 28 year old female and I am relatively established in my current role as a clinical supervisor but it’s very pressured, demanding and at times draining being responsible for peoples lives and problems. (Interesting when I put that in writing I could imagine this is the case with health and safety too)
I have studied a masters with distinction in psychology, a psychology degree, I have specialised in a cbt with PgCert which I studied full time for a year at university and a diploma in hypnotherapy and recently finished studying a clinical supervisor PgCert at uni. I work within public services and also practise privately as a therapist. I decided a couple of years ago I wasn’t going to follow through and complete my doctorate in psychology and instead just stay as a therapist. I’m passionate about helping others but this role has never felt fulfilling and the pay is not the best for the responsibility. I still have to complete a diploma in cbt which means studying another year in university to complete my registration. It’s tiring to say the least, I am unsure if it’s a mid life crisis approaching 30 or what but I’ve decided now is the time if I’m going to make that change.
I’ve considered a few options and health & safety seems the most appealing and relevant to me. I am therefore looking to sign up for my nebosh and have started the learning process in this area as part of my prep in making my decision. I may come across as a little unorthodox (or I hope to meet people here that show me this is not the case). Though, I hope this forum can be helpful in supporting me in my new journey.
Look forward to speaking with you.
Jamee

Hey Jamee, welcome aboard
Things are a changing pretty fast these days and that includes career choices. I've had many a conversation around the days of leaving school for an apprenticeship then finding a 'job for life', but as time goes on it becomes rarer and rarer to find people in a job for 30 or 40 years or so.
With people living longer and fitter, the ageing workforce continues to grow and our career or job choices needs to adapt to suit. We seem to be at a point where 10 years will give us a good career, so a 55yr old can have a brand new career until retirement if they choose. Give it 3 or 4 years for a degree in something new, then 5 or 6 years in the job(s) fulfilling that new career. 10 years left to retire, new career...and why not
I love behavioural based safety and the psychology of it all. With your knowledge in that area then onto H&S, that to me is like gold.
You're in the right place

Re: Hello - looking forward to using the forum
Thanks for the warm welcome. I have actually applied for my first health and safety support role today. Its quite terrifying the thought of making the jump but exciting at the same time.
Its a scary thought to go from being in the know in your role to being a complete novice in something again. I am keen to explore the forum to see how peoples careers have developed from the beginning and areas of health and safety people are interested in. What the highlights of the job role are and the pitfalls. A bit of insight into others experiences will be so helpful at this time.
Behavioural based safety sounds interesting I think Ill make that my first area to read up on for some adhoc reading. I was looking at the mental health side of things this morning and was pleased to see there is a wealth of information on the HSE website around work related stress etc another area I am keen to explore.
Also thanks for the mention and link to the free downloads I am sure I will make good use of those
I have some figuring out of buttons for this place to... so hopefully like you billinom8s.. I will stay out of trouble!
