Hello, I am new and need some tips

Post by joaorosa80 »

Hi. My name is Joao, is like John in English and I living in Newport, Wales.
In portugal I work for many ears as a Health and Safety Officer. Well, because my school and experience I am already a Graduate IOSH and have the CSCS card for professional.
It's enough to start working in this area? Do you know same opportunities?

In the future, what is best way for new knowledge? NEBOSH or NVQ?

I have to do everything for beginning?

Tanks for your help.

Best regards, Joao Rosa.

Hi Joao,

I think you have a good chance of landing a job in H&S, however you will need to acquaint yourself with the UK legal system - The NEBOSH National Certificate/ Construction Certificate will give you a good grounding. An NVQ would not help as it work on what you know already, you need to build a portfolio of evidence, which is very hard if you are not in a H&S role. If you cannot get a job perhaps look into job shadowing, IOSH / IIRSM may be able to help you out with their members - I would suggest you visit the IOSH forums.

What was your area of expertise whilst you were in Portugal?

Best of luck,
Mac

Welcome Joao,

Contact IOSH and ask for their South Wales Branch meeting schedule. Some meetings are in Cardiff, some Newport and some Swansea. You can always go as a guest/visitor. There is normally networking opportunity so you could meet some local H&S people. Google H&S job websites, these will give you an idea of the jobs currently available (be careful as some jobs are just agencies looking to see who is job searching). You could also look at the jobs on this website. Someone will give you the link if you can't find it.

Good Luck

Mac your help was remarkable.
I see that the way is making a NEBOSH certificate/diploma and understand what you mean with UK legal system, however, wen I study for the CITB (Managers and Professionals) the regulation isn't so much different.
Well, and now?!
Is better make the NEBOSH certificate or the diploma (because I'm already have experience)?
If I go for the certificate, national or construction?
The e-learning solution, is a good idea?
Another thing that I read I the NEBOSH site and isn't clear, have learners any financial help? The NEBOSH qualification is accredited by England and Wales regulator?

In answer to your question, in Portugal at beginning, I work as a consultant for a service provider. After I past to construction where I work more that 10 years.

P.S. I already look at the IOSH forum without success.

Hi Fletcher,

Good idea that you give me. I will contact IOSH for go to one of this meetings.

For someone new in the UK, is strange why I have to make a course at NEBOSH and not at IOSH?
For that kind of things, in Portugal we call the English word "lobby". Am I wrong?
