Next steps in higher education

Post by Safe&Sound »

Hi all,

I've got caught the 'study bug' and no matter how many times I say I'm going to have a break after this course I end up doing another ../. To date I've done my NEBOSH certs, NCRQ Diploma and have nearly finished the IEMA Certificate in Environmental management. I'm now looking at the future and what would help me progress further in the field of H&S with the aim to specialise more in Environmental.

So my question is, what would the advice be to moving onwards. Should I look towards a Masters or is this to much of a jump up? Most of my study has been home based as I prefer this route and can soak in more information this way. I was thinking of a MSc in H&S but do you actually learn much more than what NEBOSH/NCRQ teaches you? This is what lead me to think a MSc in Environmental and sustainability may be beneficial or perhaps business management?

I know this could be a case of how long is a piece of string type scenario however I welcome any advice on this.

Thank you

I moved onto a Masters in Environmental Health & Safety on the basis of the NEBOSH Diploma as I wanted to continue to progress in education and everyone else I work with seems to have one! It's not one of the NEBOSH partnered ones, but I imagine there's some similarity. I've been incredibly underwhelmed by the content, both environmental and safety, which seems to be mostly the same and dealt with in a very academic way with no thought as to practical application.

In terms of the jump up, there is a big step up in terms of time commitment and organisation (bigger even than NEBOSH) as my experience has been that you get very little for the expense involved. The assignments are frequent, theoretical and require a much greater level of detail and you've to do all your own background research, examinations are difficult to pick up marks (i.e. less choice and higher value - a single question might be worth 100 marks meaning a lot of detail).

My current thoughts are I would have been better off to look at the NEBOSH Dip in Environmental as it would be more practical and would avoid the need to have to go back through "Safety Management 101" all over again. To avoid being overly negative, I would say if you want to go onto a Masters do your research and make sure you've a clear vision of what you want to get out of it, and make sure that those selling it to you can assure you that they can provide that.

Apologies for the delayed response but thank you EagleBeagle for your feedback on this. I initially want to progress my career into Environmental and Sustainability as I am unsure what a MSc in H&S will bring to the table over what the Diplomas already offer.

Sorry for the delay, it's been a while. Just to say from my experience, you're dead right as the safety modules at Masters level are actually inferior to the Diploma. You'll be much better off keeping with your plan and looking at something exclusively in the environmental space at Masters level i.e. Environmental Sustainability, Environmental Protection, Environmental Management, etc.
