Health and Wellbeing

Post by LittleNell83 »

Hello,

I am looking for a mental health and wellbeing course. At the moment the best contender looks like the SJA 2 day Mental Health First aid course. The NEBOSH has a lot of cross over with the H&S area, so that seems a bit redundant.

Does any one know of any good courses out there?

Thanks,

Nell

I'll be booking myself on one of the courses offered by The Healthy Work Company - https://healthy-working.com/

Another option I was looking at was from i-act. I spotted them at the Expo this year - https://www.i-act.co.uk/

I hope that gives a start.

Thanks Jack,

I have signed up for the SJA Mental First Aid Course, and am looking at the IOSH Managing Occupational Health & Wellbeing course.

Food for thought. Would be interesting to know how you get on :)

Will do. Tricky to know what to look at when lots of these courses are fairly new so they haven't got a reputation yet :)

So, if anyone is interested, I did my Mental Health First Aider Course this week, with SJA, but it is the Mental Health First Aid England courrse.

It is a really interesting course, and intense. You cover a lot, and some of it does make you uncomfortable- especially when (as we had) there are people on your course who have had pretty much everything covered. You can feel a bit suffocated (I went out for lunch the second day just to get away from it and found several others felt the same, but I think this was worsened by participants on our course who were quite negative).

It is a lot of material and information to take in, however, as someone who was getting stressed at work, since coming back I feel different towards the job. I am no longer taking on the stress and now, if it is out of my control I am just not putting it on my load.

You do only scratch the cover of the issues, but then the course is to enable you to manage a situation until you get professional help, but also gives you the confidence to begin the conversation and say to others, "are you okay?" and help people talk to you.

It also emphasises the need to place your mental health before everything else and take time to look after you. I would recommend it for anyone interested in this.

Thanks Nell, that is useful. I've still not booked ours yet, but looking finalise dates at the moment.

One thing I've been asked is about the free course from Scotland's Mental Health First Aid - http://www.smhfa.com/.

I've been asked what the difference is between a paid consultancy / training provider and the SMHFA free course.

Not really sure how to respond to be honest as both courses are bound by strict guidelines and I'm not sure if the content is the same or not.

Hmmm...The link doesn't show the course contents. We did a lot and the course materials are vast. Maybe ask for an outline of the syllabus and compare? The course provider should be the same standard as the free one is SMHFA, and ours was EMHFA.

Also, with the free ones being in the evening, I don't know how receptive the brain is sometimes then. It is a lot of information and intense. If you are a person whose brain turns to mush after 4, then it may be worth considering how much you'll retain. .scratch

Nell ../. :)
