How do you share the "consequence" message.

Hello - I haven't been active on this site recently but look in now and again.

A question if I may?

In the oil industry - we want to share all "learnings" after an accident / incident within the industry but a lot of these "learnings" are not fully released due to legal complications or company policy. I can understand that.

But what do you do to share that message if the consequences have not been felt by the receiving audience?

We have all seen the videos, met the injured and listened to their plights - but I feel that industry is being so hammered with these that the message is being diluted - and the guys are kinda " yes another one" and switch off.

I appreciate that people will learn by their mistakes - young people not wearing correct PPE or something easy like that - we have all done it!
But they are then hounded and maybe afraid to report the incident due to fear of the investigation or indeed their jobs?

I personally think accident reporting is under extreme pressure and we need to ensure maximum learnings from any major incidents. But how do you get the "consequence" message over?

Thank.s Alexis.

Doesnt seem to be an easy answer. I have in the past used the local Police service to come in and do a talk - usually in the run up to winter about danger on the roads - importance of clearing the car, checking lights etc. This is usually well received as the officers will usually have incident pictures and most people can relate to what they are talking about.

But when it comes to the like of someone describing how they got seriously hurt or endangered, we are met with a less than convinced audience with people afterwards discussing competence of the person, procedures RAMS etc.

Has anyone else used a different method to get that message across?

I have used previously, although not in a while, a ripple effect of the consequences:

Incident leaves a person injured and has them at home not working for X months with half the family income:

Ripple effects:

Immediate family
no income, partner having to take time off work to take to hospital
no income, offspring having to do without treats/subs for clubs etc
no income cutting back on sky/broadband etc disgruntled family members

Co-workers
disbelief at the consequences
having to do extra work with no extra wages for one missing from the team
blame culture on management
Less likely to increase productivity for company

Socially
Not able to play with the football team indefinitely
unable to go to functions with family/workmates
isolation from not meeting with footie mates and other social functions

The list can go on and on, it is a good group exercise to get them thinking about what it would mean to them if they were the injured party. I have had all sorts of 'whats important to me consequences':

Wouldnt be able to ride my motorbike
Cant go cycling with the kids
couldnt see my lad playing football at school
Wouldnt be able to continue with my ballroom dancing lessons
The list is endless

Make it pertinent to them and whats important to them for better results, maybe keeping attendee numbers down for better engagement.

Thanks Willpool - yes we tried that.

We had a new start to HSE who was a rigger in a previous life and lost all the fingers off his right hand. When he joined the team I collared him to do a meet and greet - so everyone would hear his story.

He stood at the door and shook everyones hand as they arrived - very strong start when there are no fingers there - and described the incident and consequences.
The guy when initially injured lost his confidence and turned to drink - Lost his home, wife etc. He did come through - but you only get away with that tale once. One thing I did note was that the guy lost a bit of street cred among some of his peers.

Following up a few months later I asked some of the team what they remembered of the meeting. They all remembered the "no fingers" hand shake (to me the consequence) but there was just shrugs when we spoke about financial and lifestyle consequences. So - after training H&S for a few years before going into the project management side of it - I feel that just telling people of the consequences doesnt last long.

There will be something out there to use - and I will share it when I find it :)

There is also a video of a rigger losing his fingers with footage of his parents and him (not sure if its the same guy?) called consequences (made by Global Santa Fe, as part of their step change) that I only used once as it was more geared for 'the rigs'
