Hi Ewan, I don't think they are out yet. The HSE still only have the safety alert on their site.

We have already has HSE visits at some of our workshops so this is very fast paced action.

Thanks both. I've done the assessment using the most up to date MSDS i could find and added in the new control measures required. I can update them again when new ones come out.

Digging this one up again.

I have no experience of welding, the components or the equipment used. If I was to assess the needs of someone who is welding, what do I need to be reading up on to understand whats involved? for example, how do Identify if they need extraction or rpe?

Stephen
On gun extraction is the preferred method but if not a full air fed mask is required for all welding now. Read the alert the HSE published as a starting point

I have been and that doesnt suggest a full air fed mask is required for all welding.
It also points to a website that has an app that let you run through the different variables and that doesnt say you have to have a mask or extraction for everything either, just 'general ventilation'.

Stephen
Please do not go for general ventilation as that will bring action from HSE. Please have a look at the enforcement notices issued by HSE on their website and it will show a great number of firms have faced action for not having the correct equipment and health surveillance

The hse website tells you to go to a website called breathe freely that has a specific program that tells you what you need.

http://www.breathefreely.org.uk/

If someone welds something for 30 seconds once in a blue moon, I cant see the need for rpe or extraction, and this is the only website I can see that allows you to assess the level of control you need. If anyone can point me to anything else that does that that would be great, but this is the only one i can find and the only one being pushed by the hse.

I appreciate the advice folks, i just need to understand the why as well as the what.

Hi all,

Really interesting conversation, given that i'm in the middle of trying to sort this following the HSE advice. I too did not see anything specific on RPE requirements but had come the to conclusion air fed or battery fed filter RPE was the way to go (we have 3 guys that weld all day).
We already have smog hogs for each employee to use and extraction higher up.

What I do need to complete in the COSHH assessments for the welding consumables we use and would be very grateful if someone would be so kind to provide a sample for a welding consumable so I can get an idea how to asses this.

Thanks in advance

Its blinking annoying when people put out conflicting information. You look at one HSE page and it says one thing, you look at another and it contradicts it.

Thankyou for providing that link.
