COSHH And SDS management software

Post by TWDB »

Happy New Year All,

HAs anyone any experience with any of the COSHH management software available ?

we are looking for a solution to help us improve legal compliance and also SDS storage and availability for staff as well as undertaking the COSHH RA process more efficiently.

We have looked at Sypol and Chemdoc so far.

but would like some advice from those who have used and those who perhaps ad problems etc

any advice or comment is great

Thanks

Hi TWDB

My experience is to be very careful with these types of software and do extensive trials before you pay any money out. A lot of them are very generic in nature and don't really manage the risk as its hard to make them specific to how you carry out a process using a substance.

The assessment has to reflect what you actually do and how you use the substances and not just some smart software that looks pretty and you are promised the world but in reality you are no closer forward to legal compliance.

I'm not saying there is nothing out there that will help you just get a clear plan of what you want it to do with the software, will it give you legal compliance and then get trials set up, don't believe what the salesman tell you but find out yourself.

At a previous employer they purchased one of the companies you mentioned with every promise under the sun that "you are now legally compliant" but when it was checked (after many thousands of pounds had been spent) we were a long way off so had to do a lot of extra work to get us over the line and the software turned into an expensive storage piece for MSDS rather than COSHH assessments

Hope this helps?

Hi,
I did use Sevron in the past.
It helps to manage the Risk, if looking for a paperless solution, however, and regarding the biding of undertaking a suitable Risk Assessment does not change anything.
Problems...
I was using the tool, for sending the RA for letting the working force of the risk and control measures, however, I found that the emails were being ignored by most of the users.
As a solution, I was printing a hard copy of the RA, given to sign off, to everyone.

I have used Sevron for years and always found it to be a good tool - started with a new company recently and always subscribed to Sevron.
