Risk Assessment - Workshop

Afternoon Guys,

I'm putting together a workshop to teach/ explain Hazard identification and then Risk assessment to a small section of our workforce. Where it has been identified there is real lack of appreciation of hazards and the identification of hazards in their workplace environment.

These are "low level" workers in the waste and construction industry and I need to make sure that the importance of the Haz ID and Risk assessment comes across and that they are able to undertake Risk assessments on their operations they are involved in.

Has anyone done anything similar, any contents, videos, tips and any presentation slides anyone would like to share.

Take them to a work area and ask them to identify potential risks and what control measures are in place.

Doesnt need to be things that are wrong. People are expecting for things to be wrong. Identifying things that are a hazard but are being properly controlled is more difficult but it helps develop peoples understanding.

Maybe ask them to risk assess certain bits of equipment, then compare it to your companies actual risk assesments.

Rather like Stephen1974, I used to do training on vehicle defects and used to check high profile No1 supermarket vehicles. Almost always assured they were in tip top condition. The outcome being, that if the vehicle didn't look like the supermarket one, then something was probably not right and needed further investigation.
You could trawl the HSE and other sites for court outcomes - set out the initial scenario and see what they think. Then introduce the error that was made and consequences that arose. This adds a reality factor rather than creating imaginary events that your team will see right through and dismiss as being unlikely to be encountered.

First off, make sure everyone is clear of the difference between HAZARD and RISK.
To many, even within the H&S profession, they are interchangeable... They are not!

500,000 Volts is a Hazard, but when it's up on a pylon, there's no Risk while you're on the ground.
The Risk only comes in if you get closer to it, if you climb the pylon, the cable drops to the ground, or you drive a vehicle up to it (for example).

Search for 'Hazard or Risk' on youtube and you'll get a few decent videos of 5-10 minutes length that explain the difference; although of course, you'll have to make sure the originator is correct in their viewpoint....
