Hi

i am looking for some assistance regarding Lone Working does the business have to provide a separate Lone Working Risk Assessment and Policy or can this be covered off in a generic risk assessment

Welcome to the forums

We have a Lone Working Policy. We also have our people trained to conduct site specific risk assessments which are available to them on a self carbonating pad.

When they turn up at a place of work they complete the RA prior to commencing work, in liaison with site's rules, known issues and any visual hazards/risks they see.

You need to ensure that any generic RA is converted to be site specific and the personnel are trained in Lone Working and RA completion.

To answer the Q specifically, no, it does not have to be 'separate'. You can include it in any general risk assessment or in any way you wish as long as you can show it is done. I am one of those who always went down the 'one risk assessment per job' route so mine covered everything from machinery to handling, chemicals/coshh to lone working. I prefer one point of reference per job. Other may like it separate or the job be so complex it needs to be separate, but there is nothing to stop it being combined if you prefer that.

Hi - may I suggest that the need for stand alone risk assessment depends on the the actual risk potential?

For example - a confined space entry, a work at height task, working with live energy may have fatal consequences so should be stand alone so as there is no confusion. Are you sure that there is no big risk relating to the lone working?

Check the HSE guidance and ensure you cover at least all guidelines then try and add another layer for your own piece of mind
