Handrail Height

Hi Guys,

i think I'm overthinking this one but here goes.

We are constructing a machine with a top landing on and open walkway, as edge protection we are fitting tube and clamp style tubes.

Actual area on top is about 16m² with a rail on all 4 sides accessed by stairs.

What are the regs regards top rail height, gaps between etc...

I have 950mm top rail and gap no greater than 470mm vertically but my design guys say 1100mm for landings, and that means we'll struggle to achieve a gap as low as 470mm with 30mm tube.

And what about gaps between the verticals...?

Which are the correct regs to use?

Thanks in advance guys

Siblo,

I'd agree with the 1100 mm and it is achievable with 30 mm tube and still have <470 mm gap if you use 150 mm kick boards at the bottomm.

1100 mm
- ( 2 x 30 mm) tubes
- 150 mm kick board
= 890 /2 = 445 mm gaps.

@PaddyT

I'd agree, but depending which regs I read,

Building Domestic
Building Commercial
Machinery ISO 14122-3
Marine (Ship Regs) (because it's a replica of a boat)
Scaffolding (because it's tube and clamp fittings)

Distance can be measured from working platform, not from top of toe boards (in case someone removes them for temporary access)
