Surely it has to be in company time as it is training for H&S. If the company wasn't willing to pay me to do it in company time then i definitely wouldn't do it. I think your company is in the minority with it's approach.
I may be wrong. It was my belief that anyone holding a current full first aid certificate got an extra days leave per year.Closer scrutiny shows that this has been updated to one days leave for the duration of the 3 year certificate. Many of my workmates attended full first aid courses in their own time to get the extra day though we all get the one day first responder course.
When in danger, or in doubt, run in circles, scream and shout.
Our business does pay first aiders, but I know it is only a token sum. We are lucky in that we have lots of people volunteering to be first aiders and it is down to my discretiona fter discussions with their managers and HR as to whether or not we think they would be suitable.
So when the whole world is safe..............what are we going to do then?
We pay for neither, it has been suggsted but to no avail.............I kind of think there should be an incentive, but after screening of likely candidates.......it is getting harder and harder for me to find volunteers to do this. After all the company need us as 1st aiders and Fire wardens........yes it is a bonus for those that take it up (have been a first aider for 10yrs and a Fire Warden) but am starting to think the only way we woud get new volunteers is with an incentive..........
Jonsi am with you there, people always call me over any other 1st aider, becasue I organise the training and volunteers it is wrongly deemed that I know more...........and don't get me started on them completing paperwork, always lands on my desk !!!
I'm in a similar position, I've worked for the same company for approx 13 years (with a 7 month break at a different company - another story totally), and have been a first aider for the majority of that time.
Whilst at my current company I've never been paid extra for being the first aider, but they have always arranged for the courses during my normal working day, and paid me for the time as the company have asked me to be the first aider.
When I had the 7 month break, working for a large multi-national company, they paid for my refresher training (with an external company), they paid me for my normal time even though I was out of the office, and I was paid approx £20.00 per month for being a first aider...
After visitng client sites, you sometimes do wonder why some of the first aiders really offered to do the role, especially when they do not appear to have an interest.
I put my name down for the first aid course because its something i want to do as a passion not for the money, in my opinion just because someone works part time does not mean they can not put their name down for a first aid course or any other type of course, id rather have my first aid knowledge on my part time days then not having it at all.
