Re: Pier edge protection

I would look at it from a duty of care point of view rather than the "what's minimum I can get away with without breaking a regulation" point of view. If people are working on the pier, how do you prevent them falling off of it? If it was a public pier this would be hand rails, but for a p...

He's probably got a point, and I just love how Mr Wildgoose's name suits his profession.

Re: Looking for Good Outdoor Safety Boots

Steel Toecap rigger boots are the goto for keeping your feet warm dry and protected from dropped bricks in the winter. There are other suppliers than Arco (although there's nothing wrong with them) and I often buy boots for my own DIY projects from my local petrol station who stock amblers and portw...

Re: IOSH vs IIRSM membership

for me taking time off from my job (abroad) to attend peer review in UK isnt a seller and they wont accept Skype (or similiar) interviews. With this and the some of the attitudes I have come across on the IOSH forums (that i rarely use now) it was IIRSM all the way for me. I did my peer review inte...

Re: Installing machinery

All sorts of possible liabilities, many of which are dependant on the type of machinery. For example a photocopier comes with a delivery man, a technician to help set it up, provide initial training and an instruction booklet. If it's a baling machine then it'll have guarding and lockouts, detailed ...

Re: IOSH vs IIRSM membership

There seems to be little or no IIRSM presence in my locality (scotland) and there are several IOSH branches all with a regular meeting and events schedule, so I went with IOSH. Having recently been through the job hunter's jungle I can tell you that two things that are constantly asked are IOSH memb...

Re: SFG20

Doesn't look like a health and safety training / competence system, more of a facility management & maintenance system.

Maybe helpful in a large concern like a hospital, prison, office block, but for a smaller organisation this can probably be done with a spreadsheet or even a diary.

Re: Repairing ladders

If your chief concern is safety, and you think the repair makes the ladders safe (and you feel qualified to make that judgement) then the repair is probably fine. You would want to keep a record of it. If you don't want hassle off the HSE or local council you will want to document the decision in so...

Re: Safely lifting a pump truck with a forklift

The most obvious answer is to buy another pump truck and keep it on the mezzanine. About £200 to get of a problem is not a very high price. If you must move it around on a forklift, you need to make sure it stays put on the forks so tie it on to the fork carraige. You need to think about whether thi...
