Re: Laptop stands

the most common causes of sore neck and upper back is the screen height (the top of the screen should be level with your eyes) and wearing varifocals or reading glasses. So you may need a stand to get the laptop screen level with your eyes, and you may need to visit the optician to get glasses to su...

Re: Welders Air Fed Respirators

All that's required for powered filter welding masks (like the adflow) is that the operator is trained to check them, they are stored in a clean space (eg a locker, the adflow comes with a holdall so that's fine), and if anything goes wrong you have spares to hand. The more upmarket ones have indica...

Re: Computer says no!

I've never found a situation where safe working could not be achieved. Sometimes task duration or the number of operations complicates things and splitting the task into stages helps. The task may involve doing something complicated in a hazardous environment, but this can be overcome by either movi...

Re: Light pollution

Light pollution is the bane of the king of sciences (astronomy) so if you are putting up LED lights, please follow the example of the wonderful Canary Islands and fit bulbs with a colour temperature of 2700 K or less.... it looks quite white but has a much reduced amount of blue light. Blue light is...

Re: Machine safety — Safety distances

Hi Chris, I think you are starting from the wrong end of this process. First do the thorough and comprehensive risk assessment, Are there concrete mixers out there that do comply with the BS EN standard ? If so perhaps you should get one. From my limited understanding of using an ungaurded cement mi...

Re: WAH Work Positioning Lines

I used to wear a work position belt when I was climbing telephone poles for BT. My feet were on the steps at the top of the pole and the belt had a length that went around the pole and anchored back onto the belt around my waist, this allowed me to lean into the belt and freed up both my hands to wo...

Re: H&S Annual report

The most obvious things to report on are :- Accidents, how many in the year, how long were people off work sick or injured, what hazards and risks were identified what corrective actions have been taken how are they working (eg do the employees wear hard hats where they didn't before, do they wear g...

Re: Ethical dilemma.

If I was doing an assignment then I would remember that I'm in training in a place that someone else manages. I may not recognise safety measures that are in place, the risk may have been assessed by a "competent" person and found acceptable. I may have noticed an isolated incident that do...

Re: Plastic recycling?

We also can't get all of our plastic waste recycled but the stuff we can't goes to refuse derived fuel rather than landfill.
I think most large waste contractors can divert waste to rdf now.

Re: College Student Accident

training record for using the tool unsupervised
details of supervision provided
risk assessment and control measures specific to a young person with additional needs
You should probably consult a solicitor to get all this stuff in a chain of evidence whether you decide to make a claim or not.

Re: Contractors

You could get a hire car with it's own insurance and charge it back to the maintenance company. Why would you want to tie up one of your own employees to ferry this contractor between your two sites ? If a company is contracted to maintain your plant and it is known to be in more than one location, ...
