Re: When is COSHH risk assessment needed
Some good points. You have to remember the MSDS has to be suitable for 1 liter or a million liters of any given hazardous material, hence some vagueness from suppliers. So if I take a bottle of bleach for instance. In its bottle, in its cupboard, it is safe (ish) however if there is a fire then par...

Re: When is COSHH risk assessment needed
Posting a link to the MSDS might help someone explain specific sections more clearly. This is a bit of a grey area and has come up many many times in the past. In the end, I found it easier to do an assessment for everything. It doesnt take long and it only takes one inspector with a pole up their ...

When is COSHH risk assessment needed
Hi, I'm struggling a little bit with COSHH. Essentially, I understand the principles behind it but struggling to exactly understand when it is needed. In my current job, one of teams uses products with MSDS. I was told that a COSHH risk assessment is needed for any product which has hazard statement...

Re: What would you consider lone working?
Personally, my lone-working device (I regularly visit members of the public in their own homes) is still sitting in its box. I found it clunky and awkward to use. BUT, I think that as a white male I have an awful lot of privilege when it comes to these things and would hesitate before giving any sw...

Re: What would you consider lone working?
Regarding the driving side of the question - my ex employer had a system in place where you would need to "check in" after getting home from a site visit so they could account for you and know you'd got home safely. Just a quick call/email was enough. Gave drivers an extra sense of securi...

Re: What would you consider lone working?
For my company we define lone working as any job you are doing by yourself, even if you are on a site with people around, but the work being done is on machinery, at height, confined spaces, toxic gases etc so there is more of a risk. At the start of each job we have to log in to a lone workers app...

Re: What would you consider lone working?
- Would you consider the travel from home or office to site lone work? It depends. If it's a case of an employee walking out of one office, getting into their car and driving to another office, then not really - all the risks (some similar to those with lone working) should be covered by your compa...

What would you consider lone working?
Hi all, I had a question regarding lone working as there are different opinions on my team. In my organisation, some teams do lone work, mainly in the form of visits. Some teams travel either from home or the office and visit sites or having meetings with project manager/ contractors while on site i...

Re: Server room hazards
Thank you so much for your message. It's super useful. .cheers I just add a few questions to clarify a few point you mentioned: Sorry, I think I'm a bit dense, but why is a suspended floor and being able to remove tile related to fire extinguisher. Why would tile be removed if there was a fire? I s...

Re: Server room hazards
Just off the top of my head you'd want to ban food and drink, ensure that no staff are leaving combustible items in the room and ensure that there are no trip hazards due to trailing leads. Some server rooms are air-conditioned down to temperatures that are too low for staff to be working in (below...

Re: Server room hazards
I have worked extensively in data hall and server room fire safety, including during the construction of an extensive tier 4 data centre and a hidden/disguised tier 3 data centre, which was a customer requirement for security reasons. I won’t repeat what has already been posted (including in that e...
