Re: Work experience for 15YO on construction site
I never said 15-year old work placements were banned Witsd. I never said 15-year old work placements were banned for H&S reasons. What I did say was: - The u16 will need 100% supervision via a buddy system - Under 16yr olds are children and will need written consent from parents - with a detaile...

Re: Work experience for 15YO on construction site
The question was specifically for a construction site, so I'm afraid I will have to disagree with you about my response John. I stand by my statement that the best practice answer is NO. If the answer is YES to allow an under 16-year old on a construction site then the HSE guidance document HSG150 s...

Re: Work experience for 15YO on construction site
The u16 will need 100% supervision via a buddy system, which will cost someone 8-hours a day of lost work. Under 16yr olds are children and will need written consent from parents (and from the school if it is an educational placement), with a detailed young persons risk assessment, in-depth safety i...

Re: Angle Grinder Discs
The speed ratings are Ok for the disc to be used on the grinder. The machine speed needs be equal or lower than the disc rating. As mentioned above - the 1.9mm disc will be a cutting disc and may have been used with a side load during grinding, or the workpiece may have moved and the disc has snagge...

Re: HMO Fire Doors
Additional info = the kitchen is a shared area, therefore it is not an area of different occupation. The higher fire risk will need to be controlled via a fire door or equivalent protection. I assume that using page 65 of the handbook: The bedrooms will be regulated under 2.2 Standard, 2.2.0 introdu...

Go to the June 2022 technical handbook linked on this page. It's the 156 page document, via the middle link of the 3x listed = Section-0 and Section-2 interim publication PDF (for Domestic buildings) https://www.gov.scot/policies/building-standards/monitoring-improving-building-regulations/ The regs...

Re: Self-closers
Sorry i can't help with a definitive answer, the correct legal status may be difficult to find, as each property will be different. The "shared housing" allocation makes sense due to shared bathroom, kitchen, TV room and social areas. To keep the building safe; Dorgard auto release mechani...

Re: Would you permit a wheelchair user visiting a site into a typical engineering manufacturing machine shop? If no, why
Sir Frank Williams would beg to differ with the "NO" responses.
Apparently he visited the workshop shop floor several times a day - albeit not a typical workplace, and likely to have been designed to be accessible.

Re: Box ticking exercise
Make sure you don't make accidents acceptable - the target should be zero. I can see where my words could have been clearer Messy. Zero is an unrealistic target - the target should be to aim for zero accidents / not achieve zero acccidents. I always "adjust" my clients H&S policy word...

Re: Box ticking exercise
I can see two problems here: A) Setting targets for negative events - targets should be positive. B) Line managers driving this forward - it should be the workers. A) Many years ago the factory where I worked tried to reduce their "sick note" absentee-ism, by setting a target of 3% per per...

Re: Asbestos Study
I have edited my previous response: To try and answer your questions: Q. Why, where and when it was (asbestos) used in the construction industry, and the many regulations it has associated with it. A. Why = Cheap lightweight material used to rebuild Britain after world war II. It is mined from the g...

Re: Permit to Work - Length of issue
It will depend on the variable factors. I have generated permits for the duration of the project where the client has handed over total control of the site to the contractor - e.g. work at height in an empty building. Stick with a daily revalidation if you are not sure, or a new permit for belt and ...
