Re: First Aid - Employee Refusal To Go To Hospital
Reading through this does look like a bit of a case of over-thinking it and looking for problems and issues where none need exist. First aiders treat and recommend, and if the person chooses to follow that advice is up to them. The employer can make their own decisions as to whether that person is f...

Re: Fire Safety Course
My local fire service runs a Fire Risk Assessors course and who better to teach than the fire service? In answer to that, pretty much anyone. I've done two fire service courses over the years, and attended another where a member of the fire service came to deliver a module, and they were all univer...

Re: Lone Working
To answer the Q specifically, no, it does not have to be 'separate'. You can include it in any general risk assessment or in any way you wish as long as you can show it is done. I am one of those who always went down the 'one risk assessment per job' route so mine covered everything from machinery t...

Re: Changing Industries
I started out in H&S in engineering - a factory making turbochargers. Then I was H&S for a bakery. Then for a big poultry farming and hatching company. Then as a consultant for pretty much every type of industry except off-shore, construction and oil/gas as I either have no H&S expertise...

Re: H&S of travelling workers
Again, concerns are valid but going to be hard to implement as once the Engineer is in a remote place you have little control over whether they comply or not. I used to travel a lot for work and would land somewhere like Indonesia at what felt like about 2am to me but as it was mid-morning there wou...

Re: Delivery drivers and unloading
Interesting topic. I have a lovely big van. I don’t do deliveries so it doesn’t apply in reality, but if I did and someone I didn’t know wanted to take my keys we would have a big problem. I wouldn’t hand the keys to my vehicle over to someone I don’t know to take them God knows where. Sooner or lat...

Re: Fixed Electrical Testing
I rented a single occupant Office for ten years and fixed electrical testing was the responsibility of the landlord - my contract was that they provided me with a building including electrical supply which they were responsible for. Same with the heating system. It all depends on what the contract s...

Re: Newly Qualified H&S Advisor Delivering Consultancy?
As above, Chartered status or otherwise is no guarantee of quality. As it happens I used to be CMIOSH (since it first started when I was whatever came before the CMIOSH designation but I’m too senile to remember). For reasons too long and boring to go into I really don’t like IOSH as an organisation...

Re: Office Furniture Suppliers
Bear in mind the DSE Regs don’t mandate the back to adjust independently of the seat itself. If it goes up and down with the seat this can be compliant (page 41, para 23). I would bet the chairs looked at meet that as I’ve rarely seen one that didn’t have a back that went up and down with the seat, ...

Re: Help with Health & Safety Qualification
So there isn't a certain qualification I would need? Nexus Welcome to the world of health and safety where very little is actually defined with specifics and the words 'suitable' or 'appropriate' abound. :D As above, start with the Managing Safely to get you going, then move on to the NEBOSH Certif...

Re: The 'fears' of being a H&S Practitioner
My approach to it as an employee and a consultant has always been "could I stand by the advice I'm giving if asked to do so in a court and justify why I said what I did". It doesn't mean calming infallibility as nobody gets everything right all the time, but did I give the best advice I co...

Re: Retention of Safety Records
Remember, GDPR doesn’t set time limits for retaining data and just has a generic ‘when they are no longer of use’ type clause, and GDPR provisions are over-ridden by any other regulatory requirement for data collection or record keeping. GDPR isn’t as onerous as the pre-implementation hype or back-c...
