Re: Inspection and testing schedule

The Standards are very clear. It is up to the inspector to decide.

Re: Inspection and testing schedule

Periodic inspection times should be determined by a competent person fully verses with BS7671 and 5839, not the building user.

Re: Sleeping Accommodation

The FRA is your guiding document. If that is the recommendation then that is the recommendation.

Re: Travel distance to manual call point

Hi Messy, no there's no commissioning certificate. It was done by a local electrician who says that he cannot commission systems... But, we are well below the 45m distance - it was mention of the 30m distance which threw everyone into panic, plus we cannot find (even looking at the BS5839 Part 1 20...

Re: Emergency escape lighting in Theatre

Paul Many apologies, but for the life of me I cannot find my notes anywhere (yes, I am old fashioned and have a small but badly maintained library at home!!). During an internet search, I noted advice by Tom Sutton, a self-confessed fire safety anorak. He runs a fire safety forum attached to a fire...

Re: Emergency escape lighting in Theatre

Generally the decision whether to install maintained or non-maintained emergency lighting is guided by the occupants. If the building users are likely to be familiar with the building then NM lighting can be used. It would not matter if it was an exit or not. In a theatre clearly the guests would no...

Re: defending a slip on ice claim

I may be wrong but I think that as soon as you grit or put any kind of treatment on to ice you are taking responsibility for its safe use.

Better to either leave it well alone or stop using those routes.

Re: Living with an Electrical Fire Risk

Messy never mentioned the condition of the EL. However, if you wish to go down that route, even though it wasn't part of the question, and we assume the EL is also an issue for whatever reason..... If we decide the existing installation is dangerous, then we must do whatever is reasonably practicab...

Re: Living with an Electrical Fire Risk

How about isolating the affected circuits, thus removing the fire risk, and install temporary surface mounted lighting? Even if some or all of the temporary lighting is fed from the Ring Main... this'll be the point where you tell me there's no sockets in the corridors/stairwell  This would be...

Re: Living with an Electrical Fire Risk

This is a very simple fix. Install new lighting circuits at a height that can be installed from ground level. I would install steel conduit from the switch room all the way up the staircase at about 2000mm fffl. Throughout these works the existing lighting could stay on until the new lighting was co...
