Hi Guys,

Just had a BSI auditor/advisor on site (apparently they have changed the rule book).

During a walkround he mentioned it was required by H&S law that we have to have a service contract in place for roller shutter doors under LOLER regs.

I cant find any reference to this, in fact the only reference I can find to this is a statement on the HSE website listing roller shutter doors in the same group as dentist chairs and pallet trucks, ie not covered by LOLER.

So my not stupid question for friday is, what regulation was he trying to quote?

I would suggest they come under "work equipment" so PUWER Regs would apply

From the HSE:

"Equipment not covered by LOLER
LOLER is wide in its scope and some equipment might appear to be 'lifting' and therefore thought to be covered by LOLER. However, there are some notable exceptions that are not covered by LOLER, including :

pallet trucks, where the consequence of the load falling off is very low
roller shutter doors
escalators
fall arrest ropes
tipper trucks
dentist chairs"

Yeah, pretty sure its covered by PUWER, but I cant find any requirements for service contracts.

Just wondered if there were any other regs it may fall under, or industry guidance that has become best practice.

Maybe its a new BSI thing, maybe he's just a salesman.

I agree that it sounds as though he is trying to sell you their service contract Si.

I'd ask him to provide you with the specific piece of law (written evidence not a quoted bsi number or vague reference to regs). All the auditors I've worked with will provide that in their report.
