From: Environment Agency
First published: 6 January 2016
Part of: Flooding and coastal change
Applies to: England

"Findings of the river maintenance pilots across England from October 2013 to March 2015.

The river maintenance pilots trialled a new regulatory approach to make it easier for riparian owners to dredge to remove silt from a main river themselves where they chose to do so. The pilots also aimed to make it easier for people to find out about planned maintenance by the Environment Agency (EA).
The findings report details what happened during the pilots and what EA has learned."

My new word of the day ;) "A riparian zone or riparian area is the interface between land and a river or stream. Plant habitats and communities along the river margins and banks are called riparian vegetation, characterized by hydrophilic plants. Riparian zones are significant in ecology, environmental management, and civil engineering because of their role in soil conservation, their habitat biodiversity, and the influence they have on fauna and aquatic ecosystems, including grassland, woodland, wetland or even non-vegetative" - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riparian_zone" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
