Acceptable Use Guidelines

Postby Jack Kane » Mon Jun 11, 2007 11:27 pm

Acceptable Use Guidelines

This community forum is here to help provide advice on health, safety, environmental issues and studies for many types of courses. Please try to keep your postings relevant to the question or topic in hand - it is very easy to lose track of what the original post contained. If a post is seen to be losing it's way, the moderator team will help guide it along or it may end up being locked.

Occasionally topics will become heated debates where people may not agree on certain challenges faced. There is no problem with heated debates as long as it doesn't result in personal insults or remarks which are offensive to any individuals or groups of people. Where a debate is seen to be getting 'out of hand' it may end up being locked and/or edited/deleted by the moderator team. If a locked post is restarted by any member of the forums in a separate post, it will be locked/edited/deleted as necessary to prevent further abuse of these terms and conditions. Ignoring this rule may lead to your account being deleted and your IP address being banned permanently from all HSfB web sites.

Abusive and Offensive Posts

All new posts will be checked by at least one of the forum moderator team and will be edited/deleted if any contain offensive, rude, racist, sexist, abusive comments of any sort. If repeated posts occur as suggested, the offending IP addresses will be permanently banned from all HSfB web sites without warning.

Personal insults or attacks will not be tolerated on this forum. Offenders will be asked to cease this type of behaviour only once. Any repeat of this behaviour will result in a ban from all HSfB web sites.

Defamation

Although there are web sites or organisations not to everyone's expectations or liking, please refrain from posting anything defamatory towards them, their employees, or their products on this community forum. HSfB will not have it's good name associated with any defamatory comments whatsoever. Any such posts will be edited/deleted immediately.

Please be aware that your personally identifiable IP address is logged for each post you make, and we may be required to pass this information to a court of law where any legal action is taken against any individual making these defamatory remarks.

Offensive Links

Do not post links to any offensive sites as this may result in a ban from these discussion forums, you may post links to any site relevant to the topic in question.

Do not add any web sites to your profile that contain pornographic material. Any members with this type of web site in their profile will be deleted from this forum and their IP banned from using all HSfB web sites.

Be Nice

The majority of visitors to this forum will be mature pleasant and most of all, helpful people who are here to offer constructive advice, and we will aim to keep it like that.

This forum maintains the belief that there is no stupid question in health and safety; if you do not know then you simply do not know. Please treat all questions with respect. These forums are aimed at beginners and we have all been beginners.

Above all, have a wee bit of fun while you're here :D

The Internet Content Rating Association - ICRA

Postby Jack Kane » Sun Jun 24, 2007 1:03 pm

The Internet Content Rating Association - ICRA

This site operates within the guidelines set out by The Internet Content Rating Association http://www.fosi.org/icra/

This basically means that the content provided on this website is free from anything that may upset or offend children and gives some control to parents on what their children view on the internet.

The internet can sometimes be a very unpleasant place to be, but this site aims to make it safe for all.

HSfB has future plans for including children in our website, which means we need to be extra vigilant in how this forum is moderated. In particular:

• Rude jokes will be politely edited or removed with the poster being notified and reminded of these guidelines
• Rude pictures will not be tolerated
• Swearing will be edited or substituted using the forums built in swear filter

The swear filter does not always pick up every swear word, especially words people try to bypass the swear filter by adding characters in place of the middle letters of words, i.e. *%$^. If a word looks like a swear word, it will be edited.

I hope you all understand and help us to make this a fun and safe place to visit. After all, one of our main positive features on the site is the fact that it is friendly and pleasant to be around.

The following quote is taken from ICRA’s website and explains things a little bit more.

Thank you for your understanding and help in achieving these goals.

ICRA wrote:The Internet Content Rating Association (ICRA) is an international, non-profit organization of internet leaders working to make the internet safer for children, while respecting the rights of content providers. ICRA has long believed the best approach to protecting children online is through "user empowerment" - giving families the tools to control their online experience. When used voluntarily, tools like ICRA's empower families to match their online experience with their values, without compromising free expression or undermining other users' access to information.

The centrepiece of the organization is the descriptive vocabulary, often referred to as "the ICRA questionnaire." Content providers check which of the 45 elements in the questionnaire are present or absent from their websites. This then generates a short piece of computer code known as an ICRA label that the webmaster then adds to his/her site.

Users, especially parents of young children, can then use filtering software to allow or disallow access to web sites based on the information declared in the label. A key point is that the Internet Content Rating Association does not rate internet content - the content providers do that, using the ICRA labelling system. ICRA makes no value judgement about sites.

The descriptive vocabulary was drawn up by an international panel and designed to be as neutral and objective as possible. Most of the items in the questionnaire allow the content provider to declare simply that a particular element, such as bare breasts, gambling or chat facilities, is present or absent. The subjective decision about whether to allow access to that content is then made by the parent.

In addition to that, the label we have on our websites indicates that this site contains NONE of the following, which is why I am a great big OGRE at times!

Nudity and sexual material
• No nudity or sexual material

Violence
• No violence

Language
• No potentially offensive language

Other topics
• None of the "Other topics"

Chat
• Moderated chat suitable for children and teens

Copyright Infringement

Postby Jack Kane » Sun Jun 24, 2007 1:15 pm

Copyright Infringement

One of the most popular requests on these forums, and through email, is the request for electronic copies of NEBOSH past papers by students.

UK copyright law makes it illegal for members of this site to pass on electronic copies of NEBOSH past papers and for HSfB to distribute electronic copies of past papers.

However, if you have genuine original paper past papers (not photocopied), then you are permitted to send these originals using normal mail to other people who request them.

The NEBOSH website terms and conditions state:

NEBOSH Terms and Conditions wrote:Material appearing on this website may be copied only for the purposes of reading it and keeping it for personal reference. Any other reproduction or distribution of the material on this website, including commercial use or sale, is not permitted without the prior written consent of NEBOSH. Requests for such use should be sent to the Chief Executive.

Taken from the NEBOSH website here:

http://www.nebosh.org.uk/ts_and_cs.asp

You may not post NEBOSH past paper exam questions or examiner's comments on the forums as this breaches UK copyright law. Any posts of this nature will be edited or deleted by the moderator team.

There may also be times when you may find a website distributing ilegal copies of copyright protected publications such as books, audio, video or other media. You may not post these links in this forum as it breaches UK copyright laws. Any posts containing these links will be deleted.

General Advertising Guidelines

Postby Jack Kane » Sun Jun 24, 2007 1:56 pm

General Advertising Guidelines

These forums operate a NO free advertising policy.

This specifically relates to the promotion of commercial businesses and services or any other product/service such as inappropriate chat rooms, discussion forums or message boards at the discretion of the web site administrator - Jack Kane or any of our Moderators team.

You may publicise your personal websites or business details discretely and appropriately in your signature keeping within the spirit of these forums. If your signature is found to be inappropriate, you will be asked politely to alter your signature.

You may post a direct link to an outside site given that the information is RELEVANT to a question someone else has posted, or you believe it will be helpful to others. Sneaky advertising will not be tolerated and will be deleted at the discretion of the web site administrator - Jack Kane or any of our Moderators team.

Registering on the forums for the sole reason of promoting your services or products by posting non-constructive posts in an effort to gain presence, may lead to your account being deleted and your IP address being banned permanently from these forums.

We do not allow free advertising of job vacancies on the forums. If you are an employer/interviewer or recruitment agency and would like to post one or more vacancy, please contact Jack Kane or Alexis via the private messaging system for prices.

If you have spotted a job that may be of interest to our members/visitors, please post minimal details in the General Discussion section.

If you have a business or service that you think will benefit the members of the HSfB forums and you would like to advertise in our dedicated advertising section, please contact Jack Kane or Alexis via the private messaging system.

Spam

Postby Jack Kane » Sun Jun 24, 2007 1:59 pm

Spam

As HSfB grows, we will be subjected to increasing volumes of spam attacks. These spam attacks may be from spam organisations who use robots and/or human spammers. In an attempt to combat this, we will use a combination of anti-spam modifications to the forums and the skills of our moderator team.

If a spammer registers with the forums and attempts to spam the forums, a member of the moderator team will edit the account of the spammer to remove any offending text/links until such times as the account can be deleted and the IP address banned. The spammer will also be added to our spam database in order to help other web site owners combat spam on the web.

The moderator team will edit the user name of a suspected spammer to show 'DELETE ME 1' or similar as soon as possible. The moderator team will also edit the suspected spammer's profile to remove any offensive text or links. This will prevent you from seeing potentially offensive content and will also keep our content in line with our ICRA objectives.

We try our best to eliminate all offensive links in users' profiles, but sometimes they may be on view for a few hours until one of the moderator team can remove them. We can only apologise if you do see something offensive.

Please do not click on any links in a member's profile if you think it may be spam. If you are not sure of a link, then just don't click it. This protects you from potentially malicious software being installed on your system if you visit certain web sites, and also protects HSfB from receiving more spam. Most of these spam links are tracked by complicated software that shows the spammer where the person linked from, i.e. these forums. With the result, the spammer knows it is an active web area or link and will send more spam and more links because it works for him/her. This also goes for links in emails.

As a tip, most links in the profile of our members will look something like......

http://www.hsfb.co.uk , or http://www.healthandsafetytips.co.uk , or http://www.iosh.co.uk , or http://www.hse.gov.uk

But, if you see a link something like.......

http://www.mastell.net/index.php?target ... ;progid=61

...then it is likely to be spam. There is an even greater chance it will be of an adult nature. There is even a chance it could be illegal websites that you really don't want to go into ever.

If you ever suspect a link to be spam, please just alert one of our moderators and we will investigate the link safely for you. If necessary, we will contact the police to report web sites as we have done in the past.

Protecting Your Inbox from Spam

Postby Jack Kane » Sun Jun 24, 2007 2:50 pm

Protecting Your Inbox from Spam

You can keep up to date with HSfB using our RSS feeds which you can learn about here: http://www.healthandsafetytips.co.uk/blogs_rss.htm

Everything that is posted on the public forums (not including private sections such as private messages or forum emails) will be sent to a xml webpage for distribution through our RSS feeds.

This means that hundreds of internet search engines will pick up the text contained within all public posts and any complete email addresses. This in turn will produce masses of spam emails for the email address posted, which could be yours!

For this reason we encourage you to send any email addresses via private message or use the forum email function rather than post in the public domain.

If for some reason a personal address is posted, it will be edited by one of the moderator team to prevent the spam robots picking the email address up.

If you really want to post your email address, we would recommend that you post it using something like the following format:

hsfb[put your @ in here]healthandsafetytips.co.uk

There are other ways to format your address, it doesn't matter at the end of the day, we just want to help fight the spam monster!
