Awaiting NGC results.. Next step for higher education

Post by Safe&Sound »

Hi all,

I've just done my NGC1 and NGC2 and will be sending my NGC3 off on Monday. I don't wish to get my hopes up but I am quietly confident I have atleast scraped a pass mark. I managed to answer all questions to the best of my knowledge. I though't i'd struggle on the NGC1 but actually found this to be easier than NGC2!

I am now at the dreaded waiting stage as I wont get my results until by the 18th November.. .bounce . If I've passed my exams and practical then I plan to further my education onto the next level and do either the NEBOSH Diploma or NCRQ Diploma.

My question is which one is the best route to take? Are they both looked on as the same? I seem to prefer to go for the NCRQ as it seems to suit my learning style such as teaching myself, having to research and write out assessments. NEBOSH I found quite challenging as it was a case of reading and memorising whilst I prefer read up, learn then go and do it. I've spoke to a few people about this, they say that NEBOSH is more creddible on my CV and will open up doors whereas the NCRQ is better if I fancy a long term job in my current employment. Is the NCRQ as transferable from job/sector as the NEBOSH.

Currently I am in a HR/H&S role but wish to pursue my career down the H&S root and eventually go into consultancy/training. I'd like to specialise in Risk Management and either Envrionmental or Fire.

I appreciate any feedback on this as any information or advice will help :)

Thank you

Both qualifications will move you towards chartered membership

Yes that's true. To employers have a preference or are they just interested in if you're a Chartered or Fellow member?

I want to take the best option that wil give me the best amount of knoweldge and use it pratically.

Hi,
I'm doing NCRQ and there are a lot of students on their Student Support Forum who are getting jobs on the back of it. I think it gives you more of the skills that employers want, and I did quite a bit of calling round recruitment consultants and they all seemed to sway towards NCRQ. There are lots of job adverts that still say NEBOSH, but they are really interested in IOSH membership level or NEBOSH or equivalent. I heard that NCRQ are already more popular than NEBOSH for new students, which speaks for itself.

I liked the Hoover v Dyson analogy that one of my colleagues used!

Good luck.

How are you finding the NCRQ? Any pros and cons from your perspective?

I think personally I will end up going for the NCRQ in January once I know my NGC results in November. It seems to attract more to my learning style with a mixture of theory and practical based work.

It's brilliant - a very adult way of learning - not focussing on memorising stuff but actually understanding and applying it. The assignments seem a lot more challenging than NEBOSH - but in a good way - you can do your own research on something without having to try and remember it, but it really makes you think about things properly. The assignments also focus on giving you a range of skills - reporting to the board, preparing a presentation and script (you don't need to deliver it!), doing an in-depth accident investigation, providing advice to a client as a consultant, several risk-assessment scenarios, etc. I have used these skills already in my workplace - you really get a lot out of it. The only cons I think are the lack of direct contact with other students (although you get chatting to them in the Student Support Forum and your personal Tutor gets back to you within minutes - even at the weekend!).
