Re: Building Control Frustration
"the checklist only asks if they are present not if they are correct, that's your role to check"  It would be funny if it wasnt so pathetic. What value is it just to check they are there? I've had this before as well. Tcik box excersise saying yes we have signage, but when I as...

Structural inspection on a partial submerged walkway
Anyone delt with inspecting structure like bridges or walkways were the support structure is submerged? what regs cover it? how often do they need to be inspected? what if you cant see the supports because the water (or soaked mud) obscures them. Its an issue that might be coming up and a bunch of u...

Re: NG2 Risk Assessment
Ask for feedback on the results first. See if there is a score. When I failed my NEBOSH and asked for the score section by section I discovered I had achieved the pass mark but NEBOSH had adjusted the mark down by 10 points. They claim they do this if they feel the exam was too easy. (Ie too many pe...

Re: Folding Dining Tables - Annual Inspection/Maintenance service
Good point. Our chairs were numbered but there were a lot of them, Fixed seating can just use a plan I guess or even just use a block number However, if there is a small number of tables and chairs to inspect and you can do them all in one hit, you probably wouldnt need unique identifiers. If its in...

Re: Folding Dining Tables - Annual Inspection/Maintenance service
All equipment should be inspected on a regular basis. Tables and chairs included, even if they are not fold up ones. - Says the man who had to regularly inspect 2000 chairs... Take a school, how many kids lean their chairs back on two legs? weakens the legs, next thing, they snap. A simple in house ...

Re: Fire Warden Coverage
I think there are some recommended ratios but not a legal requirement. For Low, Medium and High Risk premises I seem to recall a ratio of 1 to 50, 20 and 15. However, I also recall other recomendations of doing it per floor, so if you have 50 over 2 floors, its 2 wardens not 1 in a low risk. Then lo...

Re: When is COSHH risk assessment needed
Posting a link to the MSDS might help someone explain specific sections more clearly. This is a bit of a grey area and has come up many many times in the past. In the end, I found it easier to do an assessment for everything. It doesnt take long and it only takes one inspector with a pole up their t...

Re: Maxmium occupancy of a public space
If i recall, there is also various guidance in the documents for dfferent types of place. I dont think there are difference for space capacity but there other restriction such as how many seats you can place together before you need a gap for evacuations and stuff of that nature. (sorry, no links at...

Re: Work Not Taking H&S Seriously Even After Accident
Hmm, its certainly hard to get companies to change when they dont want to listen. I've had the same as a consultant where I go back to clients time and time again and nothing improves> In our case we wouldnt threaten to drop them as clients and would drop them as clients if they didnt make changes. ...

Re: Work at height over work surface
Have you looked at a step platform ? It will have increased stability over a ladder/step ladder and will have a hand rail for support.
Geez, I just looked at the prices, so maybe not. Im sure I once saw a 3 step platform with hand rail for under £50 but now, ouch.

When does your health and safety go out the window?
We all criticise employees for breaking health and safety rules, but when do you do it yourself?? I can tell you right now that when it comes to moving house by yourself because moving services cost too much - manual handling becomes a dirty word. Looking forward to trying to get my bed and mattress...
