HSfB Noticeboard |
Welcome, we hope this issue finds you safe and well.
Just prior to finalising this month's issue of the Noticeboard, a post on our discussion forums caught my eye and I thought I'd share it with you here.
The Health and Safety Executive has recently published a new video called Real People in which it dispels some 'elf n safety' myths, and highlights the reason why we do what we do. Quite simply to save lives!
Our day to day jobs as health and safety professionals can very often be faced with negativity towards our goal of saving lives, but this video may just help you turn some of that negativity into a real positive step forward for some.
View the HSE's video here - Real People.
If you would like to discuss this video on our discussion forums, click here.
We are still developing the technical aspects of our next prize draw and we are also in need of more prizes, so, if you know of any kind organisations, or indeed individuals who would like to donate prizes for a spot of free advertising, please point them in our direction. Thank you.
If you cannot view this edition of the HSfB Noticeboard correctly, please copy the following link into a web browser where you will be able to read this issue direct from the web -

Don't forget, the FAQ section of the discussion forums is growing. It's a great way to find answers to day to day questions or questions on studying easily and quickly and you don't need to be a registered member to read them - Frequently Asked Questions - FAQs.
Thank you for subscribing to this newsletter and please don't forget to pass it on to your colleagues and help spread the word - "There is no such thing as a "stupid" or "daft" health and safety question!"

| Technical Issues - HSfB Forums Crashing your PC? |
Some of you may be experiencing some difficulty accessing the discussion forums at the moment. This may be causing your internet explorer to freeze and stop responding. There have been a few people comment on this recently and we can only apologise for the inconvenience caused.
The reason for this issue is still unknown, but the support forums may have identified the issue as only affecting people who use Internet Explorer 5 or 6. Firefox users are not affected by this issue. So, if your work computers still use IE 5 or 6 (which they likely are), then you may experience this issue, but if you use IE7 or Firefox at home etc, then you should not experience this issue at all.
Workaround
There are three things to try to allow access to the forums.
1. Access the forums from the link on the home page - http://www.healthandsafetytips.co.uk - http://www.hsfb.co.uk - rather than from a shortcut on your desktop or in your favourites folder.
2. Open a browser to your home page (making sure it is not HSfB forums), then double click your shortcut on your desktop to the HSfB discussion forums. This method may sound pointless, but it has been reported to work for some people.
3. Access the forums using Firefox.
These solutions are not ideal, but this issue is beyond our control at the moment. We will update you all on this issue as it progresses. You can also keep track of the issue on the phpBB3 support forum topic here - http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=936425&p=5503835#p5503835

Fitting of vehicle tracking devices? Info req.
"Am looking for some information on the fitting of vehicle tracking devices.
The reasoning behind this is to cut fuel costs by eventually improving driving behaviour and reducing speed, are there any data protection/informing employee issues here?
Should the company inform drivers of this?
Are there any issues with associating the information gathered with disciplinary procedures? (i.e. do employees have to be made aware?)"
Culture Problems!
"Hello,
I need some help / advice for you kind people
The company I currently work for has a fairly poor safety culture which I'm trying to improve , however despite giving numerous presentations to Managers and Supervisors on the importance of safety but the message just isn't getting through - they all sit there happily nodding away then leave the room and totally ignor whats been said!!!
I think they ignor me partly because I'm familiar to them and its the same old rant - if you like. Does any one know of an external presenter/speaker/ex HSE or something I could perhaps use that would have a high impact - shock 'em if necessary and wake these people up - I'm at my wits end !
Any ideas - anybody - please?"
REACH regulations
"Hi all
Ive been asked to attend a seminar on thurday and write a report about what we have to do, is it right we do not to do anying unless we use over 1000 tonnes a year of a substance?
thanks in advance"

According to the Association of British Insurers, every day in the UK 200 homes suffer a fire, and one person dies and 40 are injured as a result of fires in the home. Regrettably, many of us will be involved with a house fire in some way in our lives, and it’s not likely to be much fun. But there are preventative steps that we can take to avoid this undesirable situation, and also steps we can take to limit the damage if we’re unfortunate enough to have a house fire.
BEFORE: Precautions you can take
Document your possessions
For the purposes of potentially claiming on your home insurance, it’s by no means a terrible idea to keep receipts, or take digital photos of individual items around the house that you may have to claim for. Don’t forget that many mobile phones can double-up for this purpose. Obviously, this precaution isn’t fire-specific – you may well thank yourself for having done so if you get burgled, for example.
