HSfB Noticeboard |
Welcome, we hope this issue finds you safe and well.
This month's issue has been a bit delayed for one reason or another, so for that we do apologise. However, we hope the features in this issue make it worth the wait!
For those of you who have been visiting and taking part in the site over the past few years, you will have watched us grow from strength to strength. February 26 saw HSfB take things to the next level by taking part in this year's Scottish Chamber of Safety Conference and setting up a trade stand. The day was a very successful day and you can find out more (including a picture of a funny bald looking man, i.e. me, John Johnston) on our discussion forums here.
As part of HSfB's future plans, we will be reviewing and making one or two improvements to our services over the coming weeks and months. These improvements will help us to focus on what makes this site tick - helping you with your studies and everyday HS&E challenges.
The first essential improvement will be to cease our legislation news service. The archives will stay, but there will be no more updates to the Legislation News pages. This is to allow us the ability to clearly focus on our future plans.
The second improvement will be the launch of our new prize draw competitions. Yes that's right, competitions! We are currently developing the technical aspects of the prize draw competitions and aim to have more than one draw per year! So, if you know of any kind organisations, or indeed individuals who would like to donate prizes for a spot of free advertising, please point them in our direction.
Our third objective will be to review all downloads on the site to bring them up-to-date, and to create brand new ones along the way. Your continued support in this task will be very much appreciated.

| HSfB Time Management Tool |
If like me you try to juggle 101 things in the air at the same time, it won’t be too long before you begin to forget important things at your work or in your studies. Your stress levels begin to build up and you start to get overwhelmed with tasks, even small incidentals. Then one day something undoubtedly gives way or you simply plod along aimlessly trying to cope and never really get anywhere.
Sound familiar?
This time management tool is one of many methods you can use to help take control of your daily and weekly tasks, both at work and in study. It will help you to prioritise and arrange tasks in a logical manner and will also help you to become much more productive as a direct result. All you need to do is simply follow these three easy steps using the planning sheets provided.

Struggling with the principles of fire
"Hi Guys,
I seem to have hit a mental brick wall when it comes to the chemistry side of fire . Very patient tutor and reading my texts book and nothing. I can regurgetate what's been said but I need to understand it to be able to apply it when the exams hit in. Can anyone recommend a good book or website that I can try. I am not going to let this module beat me!"
Reducing the burden on industry, H&S related
"With so much being written on this subject, until the 100,000 plus Riddors are reduced, the one death a week from slips and trips, 80 construction related fatalities, and around a total of 5 per week taking their last breath (including the earlier examples) any further talk on reducing the burden on industry is a complete and utter lot of nonsense IMO (and I bet I am not alone in this belief!
I can't believe it was proposed the HSWA should be repealed!!!!!"
Disposal of Night Storage Heaters - WEEE Regs
"I am just looking for some confirmation that I am on the right lines here...!
My company is pricing works to remove about 50 night storage heaters, once they have been removed the heaters will be replaced with similar, new heaters.
I have been trying to get my head round the requirements of the WEEE regulations. I found out that as the heaters we are removing were bought before 13 Aug 2005 then the producer of the new equipment being installed will be responsible for the removal and recycling of the old equipment..."

| I work for one of the country’s leading waste management, recycling and energy-from-waste-companies. We operate across the country, providing expert services in the collection, recycling and disposal of waste as well as municipal cleansing. Our businesses stretch from Kent and London to as far north as Merseyside and as far south as Cornwall. Our transfer stations are based in London and Cirencester. In all we have thirty three sites.
I am based in the Essex office and work for Compliance also known as Health & Safety. I am a compliance officer and work in a team of 10 people. We carry out Compliance work on the behalf of our businesses .We assist and guide the staff and management with their health, safety and environmental issues.
Cory Environmental is the only company that transfers waste on the River Thames, keeping over 100,000 HGVs off the capital’s already congested roads each year. The rubbish is compacted on our transfer stations then collected and transferred down the river by container barges to our landfill site which is appropriately named Mucking down in Essex.
The full article, including photos of the waste transfer operation, can be downloaded here
