A new series of factsheets from the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM) has been issued recently concerning the new Fire and Rescue Services Act 2004, which has seen the first significant change in the law concerning the Fire and Rescue Service in over 50 years.

9 September 2004 - Construction Safety and Health Awareness Day (SHAD) at Colwyn Bay

As part of the national Working Well Together (WWT) programme of Construction Safety and Health Awareness Days (SHADs), there will be a free one-day event held at Eirias Park Leisure Centre, Colwyn Bay, on 12 October 2004. The SHAD is aimed at smaller construction firms who employ fewer than 15 people, sole traders and the self-employed, who together make up 83% of the industry.

6 September 2004 - Growing Problem for Call Centre Workers Suffering from Repetitive Voice Injury


The Trades Union Congress (TUC) and the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists have been highlighting the dangers of voice strain and loss - Repetitive Voice Injury - in call centres.

It has been recognised by the UK Government that occupational voice loss as an injury qualifying for industrial injuries benefit in teachers and other workers who have to speak a great deal whilst at work. Whilst teachers have been the most common professional group to require speech therapy, the TUC claim that "call centre workers have now become the fastest growing “at risk” sector."

2 September 2004 - New Rail Report Published by HSE - Signals Passed at Danger (SPAD) report for July 2004

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has recently published the Signals Passed at Danger (SPAD) report for July 2004.

The HSE describes a signal passed at danger (SPAD) as "an incident when a train passes a stop signal without authority to do so."
