The Working Well Together (WWT) Health and
Safety Roadshow campaign arrived in the West Midlands this week. The venue
for this latest roadshow is taking place at the Skanska Construction Site at
Walsgrave Hospital Coventry.
The WWT Roadshow is highlighting to both employers and employees working
within the construction industry, key advice on health and safety within the
industry and will be at sites across Great Britain over this 8 week time
span.
On-site risk reduction is the aim of the roadshows and some of the key ways
highlighted to tackle this problem are as follows:
-
tidy sites and decent welfare
-
safe working at height
-
reducing the risks of workplace transport
accidents
-
safety in manual handling
-
protecting hearing
-
avoiding skin problems such as dermatitis,
cement burns and skin cancer
-
avoiding exposure to asbestos.
The roadshow is supported by the Health and
Safety Commission and the Health and Safety Executive, Constructing
Excellence, Trades Union Congress and Makita, with sponsorships from HSS
Hire, CITB Construction Skills, Skanska, Taylor Woodrow and Bovis Lend
Lease.
HSEs Head of Operations, Rosi Edwards,
Construction for the Midlands, Wales and South West said:
"Last year, eight construction workers
were killed in the West Midlands region alone and hundreds more were injured
and suffered ill health. The WWT Roadshow aims to reduce the number of
people injured and made ill by delivering vital information and advice to
workers on site.
The support for the Roadshow is a positive
sign that the industry is working together to improve its health and safety
record.
At sites where health and safety is
proactively managed and both sub-contractors and employees are informed and
involved, a safer, healthier and more productive environment is created".
Dates of Roadshows are:
