25 October 2004 - Farmers Safety Awareness Days to Visit Isle of Wight and Hampshire

As part of the partnership between the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) LANTRA, National Farmers Union and Local Colleges, providing their successful Safety Awareness Days to farmers and their families throughout the UK, two more days are planned this week.

The first one, on Tuesday 26 October 2004, will take place at the Isle of Wight College, Medina Way, Newport and the second on Thursday 28 October 2004 at Sparsholt College near Winchester, Hampshire.   Invitations have been sent out and over 100 have been accepted for the first one, with around 250 having been accepted for the second.

The success of these Safety Awareness Days have been independently assessed and show that 95% of farmers have found them to be of value and would recommend them to others.

The help and advice given by HSE inspectors, coupled with the interactive demonstrations from LANTRA, are providing farmers and their families with information on how best to manage the risks within the farming communities, thus eliminating the injuries and deaths incurred in areas such as, manual handling, roof work and farm transport.

Mr. Steve Hill, HSE Principal Inspector commented:

"I realise that farmers are very hardworking and busy people and am pleased that so many of them intend to spare the time to improve their health and safety knowledge. I am sure they will find the day both useful and hopefully enjoyable too. If they go away with only one new idea that they are able to implement in their own business to make their work safer that will be a step in the right direction."
