21 October 2004 - New HSE Report on Risk Perception in Relation to Musculoskeletal Disorder

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have released a new research report - RR284 - Risk perception in relation to musculoskeletal disorders.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) commissioned System Concepts Ltd, to carry out research of what employees perceptions were as to their risks of experiencing musculoskeletal disorders (MD's).

The research required information from people within the workplace of what they perceived their risks to be, in order to gain an understanding of what their perceptions were and how to target information to change them.

Objectives of the project were as follows:

  • determine the accuracy of lay perceptions about the risk of experiencing MSDs
  • identify factors that influence risk perception in relation to MSDs
  • identify what communication channels are viewed by workers as the most effective for obtaining accurate information about MSDs
  • identify common misconceptions about the risk of experiencing MSDs
  • identify and develop strategies for influencing risk perceptions
